The. South Island Travel Association's request for a donation fell on deaf ears at this week’s meeting of the Nelson Harbour Board,, when it was deevlad to make no contribution. One speaker stated that it seemed that money would be taken away from the city's own affairs, and that the hoard should not give, sixpence.

An aerial survey of the area in the vicinity of the Orangipuku and Ten • makau rivers at Inclibonnic is to be carried out by the Public Works De partm-ent at an early date- for the purpose of taking precautions, if necessary, against the possibility ot the Teremakau river joining the smaller stream. The flood waters recently found thpir way into the Orangipuku, both below and above the protection works placed there a couple of years ago. However, very little erosion occurred, and the position has not become any more dangerous, but it is considered that all precautions necessary should be taken.

Yesterday the new rail car RM2I made a trial run from Christchurch to Greymouth, arriving herq at 1.15 p.m. and leaving on return an hour later. The rail ear was driven into Greymouth by Mr G. Il Maekley, General Manager cf Railways, who ,wa.s accompanied by st-'XCial other leading officials. With the exception that ,t m limited from the engine, which is of more modern design and has the latcpt inter or fitting-, the new vehicle is similar to RM2O, which has been on the run for some months. The new rail ear is to relievo the present rail ear on the Christchurch-ITok'tika service. ~ .

Invercargill, “Cocky” had lived with the family for an uneventful 17 years, and was a great pet with residents in the streets, as he often paid visits. A bridge party was in progress when suddenly “iCocky” gave a screech and staggered badly. A rush was made for the brandy bottle, and some was forced down Cocky’s throat, for it was thought his life was nearing an end. But more than the cockatoo needed the brandy when it was found that, after leading a blameless life for at least 40 years, Cocky had laid an egg —and if was slightly larger than a bantam’s. The puzzle now is to find a suitable name for the bird in keeping with the supreme effort of her life.

Through the efforts of the State Placement Service at Greymouth, 19 men and tTiree youths were found permanent employment this week, bringing the totals to date up to 219 and 38 respectively. Casual work was also found for eight men. Two were placed in temporary employment, which brings the total to 45 to date. The total placements for the week were 32. and the; total to date i« 322. In addition. 14 men wore' placed on public works,, which brings the total in this class of work to 352. This 'week’s figures include five workers placed on farms—-three men and two youths.

Those who knew the late Dr. J. W. Mcßreary will call to mind liis outstanding personality and his kindly disposition. He was ever ready to assist those in need and to give a word of chefr to the sick. Ho also took a keen interest in sport and the welfare of the town. The public, are, therefore, pleased to support a fund which has been opened for the purpose of erecting a memorial to him. To help this cause the Technical School Southern Queen Committee are holding a longnight old -time and modern dance in the United Pavillion on Tuesday evening next. Excellent arrangements are being made, and it is hoped that this effort will considerably augment the fund.

In this issue the Railway Department advertises particulars of train, arrangements in connection with Labour Day holiday events at Greymouth on October 24 and 26. Very complete arrangements have been made to meet the requirements of those who travel by rail, and a special inducement by way of considerably reduced fares is offered by the Railway Department. It is hoped that West Coasters w-ill avail themselves of the concessions offered. —Advt.
