ATHLETICS

WEST COAST CENTRE. The following is the annual report of the President, Mr G. E. Perkins, which will be submitted at the annual meeting of the West Coast Centre oi the N.Z. Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union to-morrow evening:—ln submitting to you the balance sheet for the thirtieth year of our existence, 1 have much pleasure in reporting that the last season was quite up to expectations and has resulted ia a £1 15s Bd, after donating £lO to tne Brunnerton Club and the credit balance now stands at £lB9 9s td. Theie were sixteen affiliations compared with a similar numoer the previous year, and three permits, compared, with two. Eighty-nine season registrations compared with 101, and 135 day registrations compared with 153 were issued, wnicii shows an increase of meetings, but a falling off of competitors. This was mainly due to the small suppor from the runners last year. Most of the clubs had successful meetings and were favoured with good weather bu the Labour Day meeting at Westpoi t was very unfortunate iu striking a verv wet day. However, the committee’carried on under very trying difliculties. Au old-time club, Nelson Creek, who had not held a for several years past, revived and held a verv successful meeting. Biuu ner did not function, but we hope to see this club, one of our oldest, again ’in action during the coming season. The Murchison district is still un affiliated and competitors are warned against competing there. The eye: . - have been catered for much belt than in previous years and the tvo meetings at Hokitika at Xmas and Easter were a great help to this branch of the sport. Several of our lota cyclists ventured further afield and had some success iu Cautorbuiy an Blenheim. Our local cyclists Job stou, Morland and Clarke rode "Hl i the Christchurch-Waunate road nil ld The J spoH hi the southern end of the district -is flourishing and with the further opening up of South we expect to see some teallv good meetings there in tne future. I atUndcd most of the meetings and found the sport fairly well conducted. Lovelock’s win m the Olympic L nietres and his world’s .record forthat event was received with jubilation Jy aH West Coasters and we are very proud of this West Coast native. M ith the improvement of general conditions we are looking forward to a good sea son this vear With the exeep ion oi the Southland Centre we are holding our high place in the New Zealand Union. In conclusion I desireto tha K ■ill club secretaries and officials for their courtesy and assistance w carrying on the good sport, of athletics, aLo the press for their excellent accounts of the various meetings which has enabled me to keep my euoids un to date. I beg to wish all clubs in lib C«.r« . very sweerful ...eel.ug during the current yeai.
