A MAYOR'S TRIBUTE

To State Placement Service “BRIGHTEST SPOT ON INDUSTRIAL HORIZON.” (Special to “The Argus”) WELLINGTON. October 13. A new office for the Auckland branch of the 'State Placement Service was officially opened on the sth October. in the presence, of the Mayors of adjacent Boroughs ami members o', the Councils and many prominent citizens. The Mayor of Auckland (Mr. Ernest Davis) was unable to be present, but

he forwarded a letter in which he stated his regret, for his inability Io attend, and then went on to pay a most remarkable .tribute to the value of the Service in assisting men back to normal einployment. Describing lhe .Service as “the brightst spot on the industrial horizon,” Mr. Davis’s letter continued: — “From experience I have learned that it is not within the capacity of an individual, or a corporation acting individually. to provide for the absorption of the surplus labour offiering. The placement office, on the other hand, has succeeded to a marked extent, largely because its ciierg'es arc organised on a eo-ordiu.’ilcd basis, and devoted exclusively to the purpose o'bringing prospective employers into touch with men out of work. In my official capacity, 1 have found the

office a valuable aid, and I ean pay no | better tribute to it and its place in our economic life than to appeal personally to prospective employers and unemployed alike to accord to the of lice their wholehearted support. “hi my judgment, the office is the most powerful influence that has yet been exercised in the direction of assisting men back to their normal occupations. It has proved a veritable sheet anchor iu the troubled waters of .inemployment. I feel I am voicing the sentiments of citizens as a whole when 1 offer congratulations to the Government on the initiation of the scheme, and wish it a continuation of •nal full measure of success which it - X- ri, ' hly To 'he Placement. Officer 1 would say: ‘-Carry on the > good work in Auckland. You have • the community behind you vour > endeavours.’
