PALESTINE STRIKE

ENDING GRADUALLY Delay of Inquiry (British Official Wireless). RUGBY, October 13. Lieut.-General Dill, Commander-in-Chief, in a special order to tho Forces, savs: The calling off of the strike in 'Palestine was almost entirelv due to the resolute, energetic action of the three Services. Despite j hampering and difficult circumstances, | the cordial co-operation of the three Services enabled many severe blows to be inflicted upon the rebels, and made possible the maintenance of all essential services. Our thanks are duo to the police, without whoso loyal cooperation. many of our efforts would have been fruitless. It is hoped that the campaign of murder and banditry will now cease. The next stage for Palestine affairs thus depends upon the Arabs themselves. If they abstain from further provocation the Royal Commission will probably leave for Palestine, before the end of the month. The Commission’s task will be to ascertain the underlying causes of recent disturbances, to survey the working of the mandate in relation to the obligations of Britain towards tho Jews and Arabs respectively, and to ascertain whether the grievances of both of these communities tire well founded, ami if so, to suggest remedies. (Aus. & N.Z. Cabin Assn.) (Received October J 4. at 7.25 p.m.) LONDON. October 13. It has not yet been decided when the Royal Commission will go to Palestine. It is understood that they will depart only when the High Commissioner reports it is possible for them to move freely throughout the country without the risk of interference. The withdrawal of troops from Palestine is likely to be gradual. There have been no untoward incidents in Palestine since yesterday morning. Tho streets of Jerusalem to-night presented an animated appearance as a result of the extension of the Curfew from C. 30 p.m., to 9 p.m.
