(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA. October 13The Hokitika arrived from Greymouth, last evening, at 7 o’clock. The vessel, after discharging her cargo, loads timber for Wellington, leaving to-morrow morning at 9.30. The Gael left this morning at 9.30 for Wellington. She is due to leave Wellington for Hokitika on Friday next, and then sails for Bruce Bay on Monday, the 19th inst. Guests at Keller’s Hotel include: Mr A. J. Hope (Christchurch) Mr R. O. Murray (Wellington), Mr H. P. Barra (Hokitika). Mr B. Bell (Christchurch), Mr R. Styles (Nelson), Air L. Frew (Christchurch), Mr D. O. Shepard (Christchurch), Mr P. Bankier (Christchurch), Air D. W. Russell (ChristchuTch).. Air and Airs D. O’Toole (Christchurch). Air 11. W. Lodge,, of the Unemployment. Oilice in Hokitika, has received notice of his transfer from the Labour Department to the Public Work” Office, at Greymouth. The death was recorded at Kansas City, U.S.A., of Leonard Al. Dorreen, aged 47 years, on October 10th. Deceased was a brother of the late Air E. .1. Dorreen, of Hokitika. The Rimu Flat Dredge obtained 237.85 ozs. of crude gold, for 132 hours 12 minutes, from 60,138 cubic yards of material, for the period ended October 12th. A start was made to-day with the erection of the new Nurses’ Home, at the Westland Hospital by the contractors, Messrs Willhunson and Rose. The Hospital Board architect, Air W. 11. Trengrove, arrived to day. The visiting Chamber of Commerce delegates returned yesterday from Waiho and left at 1.15 p.m.. by special train for Christchurch.

At, Rimu-Woodstock Women’s Institute monthly meeting, Airs Olson presided. A competition in art’elcs made from a yard of cretonne uas .judged liv. visitors. Misses Williams and Redder. Mrs T. Wells beng the winner, and Airs D. Wells second. Mrs .1. O’Connor won another competition. Alesdames Hogan and Griffiths were hostesses. I-t was decided to hold a sale of work on November 18th. The competition for next month will be a c-oat hanger. The County revenue for the past half-year, was £16,225. and the expenditure £16,955 19s Id. Of the rates, 52 per eent. of the general and half ■he mining rate revenue was collected, while gold revenue was £736 less than for the first half of the preceding rear. At the Hospital Board meeting last evening a resolution officially accepting the tender of Williamson and Rose of £8559 for the new nurses’ home was passed. The Treasurer’s statement showed receipts £2028 19s 6d, expenditure £1214. Ils 6d. Accounts amounting to £1478 3s 2d were passed for payment. The Aledical Superintendent’s report showed: Remaining in hospital at August 31. 67; admitted during September, 62; treated during month, 129; discharged , 72; remaining in Hospital, September 30, 57. Average number of occupied beds for yeai: 1934. 40.8; 1935, 57.3; 1936. 58.9. The Matron’s report stated: The highest number of occupied beds on any one day was 69, lowest 51; average number of occupied beds, 53.3; number of operations 35; X-rays 54; massage and electrical treatments, 141; screenings 2. Miss Kathleen Masterton resigned as from September 30. Aliss Alice Avery commenced duty as hospital aid on October 2. Aliases M. Ward and P. Fowler, Airs AL Freitas, Misses J. Ward and J. Greenop have returned from annual leave. Aliss S. Taylor resumed duty on September 11. Aliss J. Barrowman oft’ duty on September 10 and is still off and at. present a patient in hospital. The resignation of Nurse AL Connolly was accepted. It was decided to enter into an agreement with Gold Band Taxis for six months for care and carrying out of ambulance duties. It was decided to apply for six men for six months’ work on the farm, under the conditions of the Labour Department. Kumara Alcdieal Association wrote that Dr Rosa Collier had declined the appointment. The Board decided to advertise again for a doctor for Kumara, the remuneration to consist of a retainei of £3Oll per annum, free house, right, of private practice and free telephone. .1. Gillespie applied for annual leave. Left to the secretary, All Saints Church Committee forwarded invitation to unveiling ceremony. —Messrs Duff and Murdoch are to attend. ’There was a good attendance at the Soldiers’ Hall, when the Kiwi Football Club held its annual banquet. Members of the Westland Rugby SubUnion, and presidents and reprseentatives of other clubs were present. Air D. R. Dowell presided. Items were rendered by a Maori party, Mt A. 11. Lawn. Air 11. AL Coulson, and Mr D. McLeod. The following toasts were honoured: “The King”, proposed by Mr D. Dowell; “The Kiwi Club,” proposed by Mr <l. C. Stafford (President of the Sub-Union), and replied to by Messrs ,1. Walker and J. Coulson; “Sub-Union,” proposed by Air H. M Coulson, replied to by Messrs Stafford. E. W, Heenan and A. IL Lawn; “Referees,” proposed by Mr R. <R. King, replied to by Messrs R. B. Collett and J- Rutland; “Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr J. Stafford and replied to by Messrs A. 11. Lawn (Pirates). II George (Arahura), W. IL Stopforth (Ross); “Ladies” proposed by Air L. Morgan, and replied to bv Messrs J. Coulson, J. Phillips and AWogan. Three of the foundation members of the Kiwi Club were also present.
