The first vessel .since the flood to leave Greymouth, the m.v. “Hokitika,” yesterday afternoon eras watched by a large number, when she left the wharf in the current that still remained pretty stiff. Going down the river stern'first for a. distance, Captain Nalder expertly manoeuvred the turning after passing the other craft at the berths, and made an expeditious exit en route for Hokitika.

Before Air 11. Morgan, SAL, in the Magistrate’s Court, at Greynioutli, yesterday morning, George Mason Elliott, 48, a native of England, was charged that on October 9th, he was deemed to be an idle and disorderly person, in that - he had insuffie’ent lawful visible means of support. Senior-Sergeant E. Quayle asked for an adjournment of the case until the afternoon, as it was proposed to make another application in respect of accused. When the case was again called, Senior-Sergeant Quayle stated that accused' had been committed to a mental hospital, and under the circumstances he would offer no evidence. Accused was discharged for want of prosecution.

Owing to the dislocation of telegraphic and mail services over the week-end, the closing date for nominations for all chopping and sawing events at t’.e Labour Day Sports, at Westport, has been extended to Friday next, October 16, at 9 p.in.—P. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Greymoutli Lodge was held last evening and was prosided over by Bro. Long M.G. Sick pay was passed to all members entitieu. Bros. Long and Ciarke extended a hearty welcome to Bro. Anderson, Grand Master of the Nelson district, and trusted that his stay would be an enjoyable one. Bro. Anderson suitably ripilied and gave a resume of his tour of the South Island and referred to the lodges visited during his travels. Three members were initiated into the Order and one candidate nominated ror next meeting.

Tho preparation of plans for the elimination of nineteen level crossings on the West Coast are being carried out by the Public Works Department. The latest of these to be approved is a deviation to eliminate two bad eross’ngs between Kelly’s and Aickens, on the Kumara-Otira highway. In the case of some of the crossings under consideration no definite method for their elimination has yet been decided on. and in others plans are in the course of preparation by the drafting department.
