(Per Ptress Association). WELLINGTON. October 11. At least six new rail-cars, larger than those al present in service, ami capable of seating 52 passengers, are lo be built by the Railways Department in the Lower Hutt shops. The material for the ears is on older, and it is expected that they will be operating about the middle of 1937. The cars will be considerably longer and larger than the b : gge-t passenger ears in use on the steam trains. They would be fast, safe, and comfortable. Mounted on hour pairs of wheels, w’th bogies at both ends, the new cars .will be 66 feet long. 10 feet longer than the! largest carriages on steam trans, and 16 feet longer than m n -t of them. They will have an eng’ne at each end, their fuel being crude oil. It is probable that the first of the new ears will be used on the Wellington to New Plymouth line. Wellington to Palmerston North, Wellington to Napier, and Wellington to Wanganni are other likely services for the big rail-cars. The Department intends to utroduce a new type of seat into use on Hie expresses. It is described as “I ke a barber’s char,’’ in that at the end of the journey it is swung round bodily. WELLINGTON. October 12. Another “baby” railcar. for the Christchurch-West Coast service, was given a trial run from We'anglon to Palmerston North. The Dip was sue cessful in every way, ami the car wi l ! be slipped to the South Island in a few days. Great interest was aroused by Hie rail-car, which is numbered RM 21.
