PAYMENT OF FINES
GOVERNMENT BILL. TO PREVENT IMPRISONMENT. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON,. October 6. Legislation in preparation with a view to making better provision I-:i the payment of fines, and to diminish the number of eases, where persons are sent to- gaol when it is not, in the first instance, intended by the Court to inflict sentences of imprisonment, according to a. statement by the Minister of Justice, Hon. Mr Mason. ' The Minister said that every effort would be made to have the Bill pared tilts session. The Bill would be on similar lines to the Money Payments (Justices! Procedure) Act passed bv the Imperial Parliament last year. The effect of it iwouM be that no person could be automatically committed to prison for the non-payment of- a fine, but "that committal could on’y take place after every effort had been made to secure payment of the fine, and every ennsiderat on had beet, given to the, offenders’ capacity to pay.
