Final Game MAORI TEAM NOT IMPRESSIVE. PALMERSTON N., September 23. If the Maoris had played in the first half like they did in the second, there wouf'd have been a different tale to tell of their match here today against the Australian team. However, they were almost a hopeless side till the 'interval, the Australians running through their ranks whenever it pleased them. The second spell saw a definite change for the better. The Maoris were on the verge of scoring several times. The -weather was gloriously fine and ideal for the occasion. Hodgson played a, magnificent game for the visitors, and was the outstanding man on the field, but he was inclined to play at times Rugby that was unorthodox. All of the Australian backs were prominent. Mcllish was outstanding as half for the Maoris, whij'c O’Connor played a iiemarkablw safe game at full-back. The only' scores in the second halt wese a try by each side. The final scores were: Australia 31; Maoris 6. SOUTHLAND DEFEAT WELLINGTON. INVERCARGILL, September 23. Southland Rugby repr.csentativ.team defeated Wellington this afternoon in a bright open game by 3. points to 23. The weather was fine and warm. Wellington had the better of the first half, but Southland were definitely superior iu the second For Southland, tries were scored by Michell (2). Milne (2), Parker (2), Metcalfe and Sutherland. Mattingly converted three tries, and kicked a penalty goal, and Purdue converted two tines. . . , i Bor Wellington, Lamason kicked four penalty goals and converted a try, and Upchurch.
