HOKITIKA, September 22

One of the public works about to be put in hand in South Westland, is the bridging of Jacobs River, on the road lead ng to Bruce Bay. Plans for a concrete structure are being prepared. The stream is troublesome for motorists, and the bridge will be welcomed by them.

Tenders for the nurses’ new home •at the Westland Hospital will be opened to-morrow evening, when the Board will meet, and confer with the architect (Mr Treugrove). Mr Trengrove is at present engaged on plans for the children’s wara, and alterations to the operating theatre and one of the mam wards.

The Gael left Tarakohe at 10 o’clock this morning, for Hokitika direct.

Good catches of whitebait are reported in far South Westland, in the Paringa River, and some are making an appearance in the Mahitahi Rvier also.

A further party of men are this week going into camp at the Mahitahi River, .South Westland, and tire to undertake road work thereabouts. At the ILS.A. meeting fifteen new members were elected last evening. A grant from the Canteen Funds was made to the Otira sub-branch. Accounts amounting to £3l 3s 8d were passed. Messrs Samson and Gilchrist were appointed visitors to the hospital. Some eases of distress, on which the relief sub-committee required direction, were discussed' and finalised. A pens’on ease was sent forward. It was decided to obtain details as to some local boy in view of a Flock House appeal for trainees to be sent.
