Christchurch students’ Visit
WESTPORT, September 21. Parties of Christchurch girl boy student 9 who are visitors to Westport played basketball and Rugby foot bn 1 teams belonging to the Westpart Technical High School to-day. The weather ami the Tech, ground were excellent.
A bright, open game of football ended in favour of the local team by <t margin of one point. Tn the last minute a dropped goal gave Westport the victory. For Westport Tech. Lowther scored a trv, and Croudis and Smallhofrne potted goals. For the visitors,. I‘hilips and Roche scored tries, while Rawsirom drop kicked a. goal. Westpi.rl thus- won by eleven points to ton. The visiting girls made amends for the boys’ reverse by defeating the Westpoi-t Technical schoolgirls by fourteen goals t 0 i en - Tire visitors have been well entertained, and have enjoyed every minute of their stay. Visit of Labour Department Officials: Messrs Bromtley and Hadley, of the Employment Division of the Department of Labour, anj Mr, Hunter, the Commissifoner of Employment, will arrive at Westport to-morrow. They will confer with the Alining Committee. County Council:
There will be a special meeting of the County Clouncil to-morrow to discuss’the Public Works Estimates presented to Parliament. The amount voted for this county is considered to be inadequate for district requirements.
Labour Day Sports: In the unavoidable absence of the Mayor, the chair was occupied at Sunday morning’s meeting of the Labour Day Sports Committee by Mr W. O’Neill. Those present were Messrs T. Adank, F. Champion, A. Duncan,. A. Ridsdalc, W. Mr-Keown, W. P. Jack son, A. Spencer, .1. Hay-AleK.cn zie, P. Ryan, and W. 11. Woodcock. Mr J. Flaherty. Paroa, wrote intimating that he would be pleased to again act in thy capacity of handicapper for the chopping and sawing events. AlFlaherty also put forward suggestions regarding transport facilities from Hokitika and Greymouth on Labour Day. which the committee decided t" net upon, and Mr P. The secretary mentioned that all arrangements in connection with the booth had I'ccn completed, and the management of same was left to a. subcommittee consisting of the Mayor and Mr and .Mrs P. Ryan. It was decided to call tenders for the, supply of logs, and Mr O’Neill was authorised to interview the local Railwax- Department regarding the supply of log irons. There was a large attendance at the Labour Party's community sing h.dd last evening. Air W. 11. Woodcock presided. -Mi's Saunders provided the music, and Mr D. Saunders was songleader. During Hie evening, item.' were rendered by Aliss Archibald, Messrs A. Caldwell and F. Woodcock.
Buller Rugby Unio»; .M t-| 11. Hammond was in chair at the usual weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Buller Rugby Union, held in the County Chambers. Those present were Messrs G. Stephenson,. P. Ryan, A. Dey, T. Phipps, V. Goodall, A. Ridsdale, and \V. Craddock (secretary). The United CluD .was fined the sum of os for .fail ing to give proper notice of their intention to forfeit to Old Boys in their fixture for the Anibury Tup on Saturday. It was agreed that the final for the trophy b e played between Old Boys and Rangers. Next Saturday’s Fixtures: ALBION CUP. Stars v. Old Boys, Victoria Square. 2.45 (V. iGoodrtll). Woodpeckers Again Defeated: Star backs were in great fettle on Saturday when the side ran all over Woodpeckers in their Albion Cup fixture. Both sides were at full strength and the ground and weather conditions were in perfect order. The Wood peckers’ forwards gave a fairly good display, but behind the scrum there wa s only one team in it. and that was Stars. They dominated the game, and with bright. bouts of passing got manj' tries. The defence was unab'o. to cope with the movements, and Starsi ran up the big total of 45 points, scoring 11 tries. For Woodpeckers, Derrick got two tries, and Hampton one; none of which was eonverted. Although the opposition was Weak, Stars must, b.e credited with playing a game that promises well for their chances against Old Boys next Saturday in the final fior tho Albion Cup.
Stockton Defeat Bachelors: Stockton, juniors, who have done exceedingly well thi s season, effected a good win on Saturday at Westport when they defeated Bachelors (Denniston) in the final of the country section of the A'bion Cup cympetition. Play was mostly confined tn the forwards on both sides, neither set of backs shaping 100 well. The teams crossed over with the Denniston side holding a one point advantage. Stockton forwards t,ook the honours in the second, half, and a- try by Walsh converted by A. Chippendale sealed the issue for, them by 9 points to 5. Hokitika Team Goes Down:
An atmosphere of friendly rivalry prevailed at the Trotting Track on Saturday when Pirates (Hokitika) played a holiday fixture against Westport ’s best junior side, Oi’d Boys. Tlie match was an interesting one. and revealed some pleasing Rugby. D. Strachan and McDonald capped a c,ouple of good passing bouts with fries and the former also added a penalty goal. For the visitors, Abbott got a try. Old Boys won 9-3. The visitors], who created a great impression by their conduct on and off the field,
during their stay, thoroughly enjoyed the run to Westport. Soccer: Although weakened by the absence pf G. Orman, ,T. and T. Blyth, AH Blacks (Millerton) added to their manv successes this season by defeating Westport Hearts at the new grounds adjoining tho Technical School on Saturday, by five- goals to pno. The visitors looked and played like a winning side, and the result was at no stage in doubt. Taylor was in great scoring mood, getting four of. the live goals scored by his side. Anderson (All Blacks) was easily tho best, back playing. “Bud” Smith got Westport’s only goal.
West port juniors, by managing to draw with. Birchfield in the curtainraiser;. earned the privilege of meeting All Black juniors in the final of the competition next week-end. Edward Bellamy Society:

Late Mr Evan Junes; The funeral of the late Mr Evan James Jones, of Kongahu, which took place yesterday was largely .attended. Karamea district being well represented. There were many floral tributes. Rev. Collins conducted a service at tho residence, and Rev. J. W. Bloyee officiated at the graveside. Worshipful Bro. Bradley, of the, Connaught Lodge. Nelson Education Board’s Decisions: An intimation was received from the Education Department at the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board yesterday, that schools would in future be graded on 95 per eent. of the average school roll, between October 2 and 31. instead of an the average attendance. The Board decided to increase all committees’ allowances by 42 per cent, plus arrears, from April 1. The Education Department advised that, the conveyance and board allowance would be paid for post-primary pupils on the same basis as primary pupils. It was decided to apply to the Department for authority to appoint, an additional assistant teacher at Inangahua Junction. Mr. Llewellyn, head teacher at Waiuta, was granted leave of absence for tho first term of 1937, in order that ho might visit England. The resignations of Air Hammond, assistant, at Westport, Mr V. Alaleolm, sole teacher, Newton Flat, and Miss E. Parker, Westport were accepted. Teaching appointments made wero: Head teacher, Tahiuianui, Air.
