RUGBY FOOTBALL

Another Victory

OTAGO DEFEATS WELLINGTON.

(Special to the “Argus.”) DUNEDIN, September 19

Before a crowd of 22,000- spectators, Otao-o Rugby representatives- scored a convincing win over Wellington at Carisbrook to-day. , The game was hard and fast and marked throughout by bright open play and deadly tackling by both sides. Wellington’s only score consisted oi an unconverted"try by Nees. _ For Otago, Watt scored early m the first spell and Trevathan converted with a magnificent kick. At this stage Wellington were serum-ma-inn well and several unsuccessful attempts were made by the visiting backs to gel the ball away and out to the wings. , Tiudill was playing at hall back, wing to the absence of “Joey ’ Sadler, the All .Black half. Ju the second spell Wellington secured immediately and carried play into Otago territory. The blue forwards, led by tlrueii, Laney and Vorrath cleared well io half way. From an infiim'emeiit HI yards inside Wellington terrTlory Tieva'tlin n kicked a splendid goal, so that Otago led B—o.8 —0. Shortly afterwards Otago secured from a serum, near the ’Wellington corner flag, and Simon sent Trevathan round the blind side to score a neat, try well out. Trevathan missed the kick at goal. Otago 11; Wellington 0. Ten minutes later, Gillies made a brilliant opening, and Fookes scored near Ihe posts. Trevathan goaled, so that Otago led by 16 points to nil. Exciting play followed, but Wellington did not at any time look like taking the .Shield. Griffiths injured a leg and went back to full back, while. Pollock came up to second five-eighth. There was no further score until .the closing stages of the match, when Nees scored for Wellington. The try was unconverted. Full time sounded shortly after with Otago still in possession of Hie lianfurlv Shield.

Of the Otago team, Gillies, Trevatliau. Watt, and Fookes were the best backs. Ten points were scored by Trevathan alone, thus adding further to the largo tally of points scored by this player in representative football. Gillies and Watt both reproduced the .form which won for them thcii All Black caps this year. Fookes gave once again a glimpse of the form he Ims always shown in Otago football, and completely overshadowed his opposite. The Gt ago i'orwitrds played tin a ptick ami once again proved tin: value ot ‘ ‘ limit iug in a pack- ” la Jiiie-oul work, however the Wellington men shone. Lamason, Wells, Fraser-Smith, and Andrews being prominent. The two Welliugtonians, Griffiths ami Pollock, were decidedly off form. Taylor played a .sound game at fullback and on the day was bettor than Pollock.

Next Saturday, the Otago team meets the touring ’West Coast team in the final Ranfurly Shield match of the season. Although the previous matches have mostly been won in convincing style, it is generally recognised that the West Coast men will.be a formidable proposition, and one' capable of surprising even the best-informed followers of Rugby.
