ROOSEVELT A RED !

HEARST PRESS STORY.

AVASHTINGTON, September 1?

The first so-called mud-slinging of the present Presidential campaign oeiui"ed with the publication in Hwirst newspapers of a charge of Communist su]>|>ort from' New Zealand. The ari’icle said: “The real candidate, the unofficial candidate of the Comintern is Air Roosevelt.”

A statement has been issued by the President’s secretary, declaring that the attempt of a certain notorious newspaper qwner to make it appear that the President passively accepts the support of alien organisations hostile to the American form of Government is conceived of malice and born of political spiTe. American people would not permit attention to be diverted from the real issue to fake issues which no patriotic, honourable, and decent, citizen would purposely inject into American affairs. Hearst's Argument A PRETTY SILLY ONE. (Received September 21, at 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 20. Air Hearst, the press magnate, again asserted to-day, in a thousand-word leading article, from Amsterdam, Holland, The charges he has niade againsi President-, Roosevelt. At the same time he replies to the President’s statement. Mr Hearst says: “L have not stated, at' any time, that the President. willingly,' or unwillingly, ha* received the support of Karl Marx Socialists, Frankfurter Radicals. Communists. Anarchists, Tugwell Bolsheviks. or Riehberg revolutionists, which constitute The bulk of his following. I have simply said and’ shown that he does receive the support of these enemies of the American system of government. and that he has done his best to deserve the support ot all such disturbing an.l destructive elements.” OTHER CANDIDATES. NEW YORK, September 1. The rank and file of rhe American Federation of Labour ma J’ support Air Roosevelt, in return for liis gift of “vertical.” as opposed to “company” unions, higher wages, shorter hours, collective bargaining, and better organisation at the White House. & The Socialist’s will continue to support their candidate, Air Thomas, in hi s third bid for the Presidency. The Communists have their candidate. Air Browder, freshly returned from the Third International, at Moscow.

What has been known as the Third paiTv has its candidate in Mr Lembke, who is sponsored by three groups., the Social Justice unit, led by Father Coughlin, the Radio Priest, who claims he has 6,000,000 members; the Share-the-Wealth faction, founded' by the late Huey Long, and those who have been led by flic promise of Dr. Townsend of an old-age pension of £5O a nionrh, provided they spend it all.
