DISTRESSED AREAS
BRITAIN’S PROBLEMS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, August 11. A site of approximately 700 acres has been secured near Gateshead, North Durham, for development by North Eeastern Trading Estates, Ltd., which is a company formed recently to acquire and develop the site and provide all reasonable facilities needed by industrialists starting new industries in distressed areas. The comj pany’s capital was provided by Parlia- ' meat under conditions arranged by the ( commissioner for special areas in Eng- | land. The purchase of the site is estii mated to cost between £60,000 and I £70,000. It lies immediately to the !■ west of the London and North Eastern Railway’s main line, aud close to the Great North road, and further access to it will be provided by the development of arterial roads to the west and east. Although arrangements for purchasing the site have just been completed, 35 enquiries for factory sites have already been received, which Is regarded as a clear indication of the need of this development. Work will be pressed forward with all speed in order that everything will be in readiness to start new industries at the beginning of 1937. Essential services such as electricity, gas, water and other forms of power are readily available in ample supply for the new town.
