monthly meeting. At the monthly meeting of the Grey County Council last evening, there were present: Crs. J. Byall (chai:"J,,,). J. H. O. fsn-r A. Mf-Dnnni‘ll, W. T. Ogilvie. A. Uol> son and A. Donne’lan. Accounts amounting to £.>•!- were passed for payment. 'llie Main Highways Board lorw.ud ed authority for expenditure of maintenance as'follows: Pig Xn kau v £1710; Grey-Westport. £-000. Kumara-Uaiipiri, £5OO. _ . The Main Highways (Commissioner of Transport') stated that the Depart, ment desired the general adoption oI Cass Hl for 1 mH rural roads allowing a. classification up to 61 tons, and a * so desired a Hat classification to Class HI of the highway system in conn ties. The letter pointed out the small number of vehicles above this class.f,cation using the Big Grey-Ta ramakati highway, and requested roelassifica..ion from Class II to Class HE The chairman said 'that the highway was one of those being taken over by the State. It seemed necessary to consider, the classification of a 1! roads in the County. He moved that the engineer report, to the next meeting. Or. Ogilvie seconded the motion, which was carried. The Counties’ Association forwarded replies to questions put to the Labour Depar'.rnent in connect'on with awards affect in,g counties. The letter was held over tx> be dealt with at the next meeting. It was decided to comp’y with the Public Works Engineer’s request for the legislation of proposed new Big River-Rough River Road. The County Engineer (Mr J. Higgins) stated that the cost to the County would be about £lOO.
The Minister of Public Works suggested a contribution, of £2OOO towards the cost of the Crooked River Road, stating '.that the roaj would increase the va/ut. of the property given access to by at least £1 per acre.
Or. Robinson said that it was a public road, and not increase the value of the property adjoining at all.
Cr. Mulcare said that the Bough River .and Kopar-. Roads were opened without cost lo the landowners. Cr. Robinson said that the company concerned had done enough in donat'ng the land. Cr. Carter said that a stand should be taken ngainst the attitude of the Department. Some people had established their lifimes without road access, and he did not .hink it was right to demand from these people the cost of roads. Ho protested against the Department's .atti ude. Land was not now developed untiji road access was (riven., am] that was a national duty.
On the chairman’« mnt on, the on ■ (fiiieer was instructed to make a suitable reply. The Conservator of Forests forwarded the schedules showing the amount of fifths :tml tenths accrued for quarter ended June 30. 1936 —£471 10s Sd.
The Commissioner of Crown Landforwarded schedules showing halves and thirds for quarter ended June 39, 1936.
The Kuminrn Borough Council’s roquest for a conference in reference t.:» maintenance of '.the Taraniakau bridge was agreej to. the County Clerk and engineer being appointed to represent the County. Approval was given to sub-division plan of land at Karoro (F. Kendrick) -n the application of Guinness and Kißellingham. iMessrs Joyce and Brosnan gave not ce of a cj'aini by J. A. Ryan in r.espcet of gravel pit. taken under Public Works Act.
It wa. s decided that the Council hear Air Ryan’s objection at the next meeting.
No- action was taken ’n regard to the Waipti County Counc.l’s letter suggesting sealed governors to reduce the speed of motor lorries. The Railways Department requested that all maintenance work a; crossings be do-no under the supervision of railway foremen. The letter was referred ’to the eng neer.
Applications by Kumara Goldfields for permission to construct a box cul vert across the Greens.one-llohonu Road, and by E. Rnbbo to construct a -water race crossing the Grey-West-port Road a ’t James mine were granted subject to the conditions laid down by the engineer. AV. Blackmon and five pthers requested the election of a traffic bridge across the Big River. It was pointed out. tha.: lack of access was retarding development in the district concerned.
C’r. Mulearc sa'd that he understood the settiens were willing ;'o contribute towards the cost, and he thought the Council should assist, lie moved that
application be made to phe Public Works Department for a grant £or the bridge or, alternatively, for a road connection to the present bridge.
The chairman seconded the motion which ;wa.s carried.
Kidd, Bros., Blackball, applied for a slaughter house I-cense, and Wilson and C ark objected. The matter was referred to the -Minister of Agriculture.
The engineen’s action in granting permission to the Bg Tree Coy., to erect a petrol pump a.. Atarau was approved. An application from the Technical School for a grant, towards the reference library was referred to the Fin ance Committee.
McAlpine ami Shanks requested improvements at Rough and Tumble Creek, No.iown. The application was referred to the engineer.
A copy of 'the County Health ByLaws -Witts received from the Buller Countv Council.
Cr. M.ulcaie reported briefly on Ins attendance 'as the Counc.l’s representative at the centennial meeting la Hokitika.
The Grey Vall'cy Farmers’ Union requested that the registration of dogs be enforced. The letter pouted out that many half-stcrrved dogs were a menace to sheep.
The chainnan and Cr. Mulearc agreed that something should be d.one and on Cr. McDonnell’s motion, the clerk is to procure full detai's of their scheme from the Iniangahua County Cjouneil. Cr. Muleare asked what- was the position regarding- the Ngahere Terrace Road. It served the on?y sports ground in the district,, and he hoped something would be done shortly. The engineer said that he was still waiting flor the Railway Department’s valuation of the land, which they had
agreed to make a month ago. The treasurer (Mr M.
