(Our Own Correspondent). Members of Lodge Mokihinui held an enjoyp.bl.’e social evening in the Lodge room at Seddonville on Saturday. Dancing, card games and eommuiiity singing provided amusement tor young an<! old, while Luff’s orchestra played popular music. Among those present were Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Austin, Mr. and Mrs. C. Smallliolme, Mr and Airs S. Paul, Mr and Airs W. McEwan, Air and Mrs T. Neilsen, Air and Mrs E. A. Ashton, Mr and Airs S. Jordan, Mr and Mrs T. A. Smith, Mrs S. Campbell, Airs W. Smith, Mrs A. Alulholland, Alisses J. Bennett, A. Luff, P. Blair, 11. AlcDonald, H. Simpson, Aiessrs C. Jones, A. Taylor, Ct. Quinn, T. Alurray, 11. AlcAlillan, C. Cook, J. Todd, Air and Airs C. Curtis, R. Luff and C. Johnson.

An epidemic of mumps is prevalent locally and almost every home has a case. In nearly every instance the victim is a youth ’or young man, school children and ladies thus far having escaped infection. The junior branch of the omen s Institute held their monthly meeting in the Alission Hall on Tuesday evening. The attendance was poor, due to stormy weather, and Miss T. Gear presided. The roll call for the evening was Famous Authors and their Work. The discussion provided an interesting and instructive half-hour. First prize for an eggless ginger cake was awarded to Miss I. Walsh, the- event being judged by Airs. S. Campbell. A jumbled words competition was won by Misses I. Walsh and P. Neilsen. Aliases V. Layfleld and I. Walsh acted as hostesses.

The Presbyterian Church committee held a social evening in the Mission Hall on Thursday. Rev. F. Bush presided over a large attendance,, and Mill. E. Gear acted as community song leader. Musical items were given by Bramwell Tyler (song), Alwyn Tyler (recitation), AV. Parsonage (mouth organ solos), Mrs Tyler (song) and'Miss D. Thompson. Mrs. A. Roskvist acted as organist. After an enjoyable supper Rev. Bush made a short address, in which he reminded those present that a special service for men conductel by Captain O’Hara would be held in the Mission Hall next Sunday. Mr. AV. Hardy. managing director of Stockton Coal Company, paid a visit to this dictrict last week and inspected the Company’s colliery and plant. Mr. I. Tyler is an inmate of Buller Hospital. Air. AV. Parsonage, at present manager of Charming Creek Coal Company has been appointed to an inspectorship under the Government. Whippet Racing: The weather was line but overcast

for the local Whippet Club’s race meeting held on Sunday and a fairly large crowd of spectators were present. A gold medal presented by Air. AV. Kiely for the winner of the middleweight hand’eap was won by Air. S. Davis’s Argyle Lass. The results were as follows: —
