(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, July 2. The School Committee is anxious to introduce military training .at the Ji.ll. School, and has decided to ask the authorities to form a cadet corps immediately, as desired by the rectoi and boys. . Recent arrivals at Keller’s Hotel include: Mr and Mrs E. C. Johnston (Auckland), Miss T. Donald (Auckland), Mr N. A. Vercoe (Nelson), Mr J. p. Shurlcy (Nelson), and Mr AV. Wright (Christchurch), Considerable interest is manifested in the .Whippet Club’s meeting to be held on Sunday afternoon, at the rlTeeeourse. The Municipal Band will be present. The Gael, wdtich arrived yesterday from Greymouth, is sailing for Well.ugton with timber to-night. A slip occurred a few days ago in the claim of Messrs Fyfe and Mehrtens, at Calligans, the former being nearly smothered when found by his mate, who was absent when the slip came down. Cook Bros., from nearby, rendered assistance. Fyfe was consideuablv injured, .and was brought to the' Westland Hospital. Only prompt assistance saved his life. At Arahura live stock sale yesterday, Messrs M. Houston and Coy. sold the following lots: —For 11. Olderog, 1 heifer at L. 5 Tss, 1. cow at £4 12s tid, 1 stag at £2 15s. 1 aged cow at £2 7s 6, 1 runner at £3; 1 for Wm. Houston, 1 cow at £4 2s 6d, 2 at £3 7s 6d, 3 at £2 ss; on account of a client, 3 heifers at £6, 1 at £7 ss; 2 'at £5 15s. 2 at £5 15s; for AV. A. Jamieson, 4 bullocks at £lO 12s 6d, 3 at £9 10s, 2 at £9 2s 6d, 2 at £8 10s, 2 at £8 15s, 3 heifers at £7 15s, 4 at £7 12s 6d; 2 light cows at £4, for T. Bradley, .1 runner at £2 17s, 1 cow at £5, on account of a client, 1 cow at 10s. At the Harbour (Board’s meeting the signalman reported the bar is in splendid order, and a straight channel out. Th,e depth of water at the berthage had been increased bv five feet for 200 feet, and 50 feet wide. The secretary reportd the work of deepening the berthage had cost £519, some 6575 yards of gravel being handled. Accounts amounting to £99 10s 3d were passed for payment. The application of AV. Friend for a section towards the beach was granted at » rental of £1 per annum. A vote of sympathy was expressed to Mr Heenan (a member of the Board) who suffered a bereavement since last meeting. Mr Heenan thanked the Board. z t"sim lar vote was passed to the relatives of the late W. E. Williams. Miss Ada Lynn leaves on Saturday for Auckland, where she is to be married on Saturday week to Air AVilliam Woolhouse. A special meeting of the Anglican Mothers’ Union, in connection with the jubilee of the organisation, was held’yesterday. At 10 a ' ln> ’ •? Coni ‘ num on service was held in All Saints’ Church, the celebrant being Rev. AV. E. Davies. A meeting in the afternoon was well attended, Mrs Davies presiding. Solos were sung by Miss Ada Lynn, and pianoforte selections were played by Miss Gwen Jacobs. At th c school committee meeting, the Rector reported tire roll number of the primary school at 330, average attendance 300.7. The secondary department roll 115, average 111.3. Nine hud recently left to take up positions, and in all' cases reference had been made to the school. He was pleased to see the committee taking up the position of the playing fields. He urged that more interest be taken -n the school sports by parents and friends. He also reported that since November last, when he opened an account in th e Hokitika Savings Bank for schoo 1 children, to date the account stood at £62 9s 3d. The committee commended Air Aienzies for his efforts in inculcating thrift with, the children. It was decided to provide glass doors for the High School Library shelves. Messrs AV. H. Shannon and H. AV. R. Sweney were appointed visitors for the ensuing month. It was resolved on th e motion of Mr Shannon, and seconded by Mr Phillips, thai, a temporary loan of £5 be voted for the school jub lee celebrations. Awatuna school committee wrote asking for attention to their school by the dental clinic. —Left in the hands of the secretary and chairman to arrange. The Secretary of the school committees’ Association wrote asking th e support of members for Air Morgan, for a vacancy on the Education Board. It was resolved that the comm.ttee disapprove of the School Committees’ Association endeavouring to influence members of committees in th e matter of the election of a member to the Board. Mr Richards said the football ground was in a deplorable condition at the school, be.ng uneven, with rushes growing in patches anfl pud dies. The senior boys were limited to a small area. It whs essential that something he done as soon as possible. Several loads of gravel were needed for other parts of the grounds. It was resolved to obtain ten loads of gravel.
