ITALY’S CONQUEST
Not Complete LONDON REPORTS. (Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received July 2. at 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, July 2. Sir B. Barton (British representative) has returned to London from Addis Ababa. Interviewed by the '■‘News-Chronicle,” he declared that nobodv knew the real state of affairs in Abyssinia, saying: “Actually, the Italians occupy only two narrow strips of the country. They cannot be said to be occupying it in the true sense at all. The country as a whole has not submitted.” The Manchester “Guardian's” diplomatic correspondent says: News reaching London confirms a report that the Italians are having serious difficulties in Abyssinia. There, of course, is no general or organised Abyssinian rally, but bands of Abyssinians fiercely are resisting Italians, even if only sporadically. Severe fighting is reported to have occurredin lhe neighbourhood of Ankomar. in which a number of Italian officers was killed. Even in Addis Ababa, -iho.' position of the Italians is not altogether secure, and outside the town there is no safety except in strong detachments.
