The Chamber of Shipping’s index of freight rates for May, shows an increase of 3.09 per cent, compared with April, and J 5.45 per cent, compared with a year ago. Another iii<li<-at ion of the recent improvement in the shipping outlook is given by the orders .for six highspeed cargo liners, just placed by the Ellerman line. Two twin screw turbine liners each of 10,6000 tons deadweight for the South African services of Ellerman and Bucknail and Hall Hues, are to be built by Crammell Laird at Birkenhead. Two turbine cargo liners, 9800 tons deadweight for the Indian services of the City and Hall lines by Barclay Curie on the Clyde and two cargo liners, 4.300 tons deadweight for the Mediterranean and Levant services of Ellerman and Fapayanni and Westcott and Leurance line by Gray and Co., at West Hartlepool. These orders are in addition to the cargo liner for the Indian trade, and the last passenger liner for the Bombay service, both under construction on the Clyde for the Ellerman lines. CURRENCY WAR RUGBY, June J 7. Recalling that the French Government had stated it was not their policy to de-valuo the franc, Air. N. Chamberlain (Chancellor of the Exchequer) refused in the House of Commons to answer a question based on the hypothesis of devaluation of the franc. Ho said he took this opportunity to deal with what, he described as a “misapprehension” current in some quarters. Mr. Chamberlain said: Our monetary policy has never been governed by any desire to obtain competitive trade advantages. The Exchange Equalisation Account plays the part only of smoothing out unnecessary fluctuations. AUSTRALIAN INTERNAL LOAN CANBERRA, June 17. The Commonwealth internal loan of nine million closed £1,800,000 short, the amount subscribed being £7,200,090. Underwriters will make good the shortage. The Treasurer, Mr. Casey, stated that the subscribers numbered 7650. He added the failure to obtain the full amount was attributed to the improvement in business conditions, more outside avenues being now available for investment of capital, than during the depression.
