WOMAN’S DEATH

Hit by Locomotive AUCKLAND MYSTERY. (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND. Al ay 10. Found lying unconscious on the Railway line at Papatoetoe Station, about 6.30 p.m. on Saturday. Airs. Louie, Thompson, aged 61. widow, employed as housekeeper at Papatoetoe. died at the. hospital a few hours later. From the. nature of her injuries, it is concluded Airs. Thompson was struck by th,, engine and thrown clear of the lines. The first indication of anything untoward having occurred was the discovery of a. woman’s shoe on the island platform' by the guard of a train duc« to leave Papatoetoe for the city. He reported the matter to the Stationmaster. Air. A. N, Bassett, who made a search at the northern end of I he, platform, where the shoe was found. Airs. So far as has been ascerlaine«l. no one saw the. mishap, or can throw any light on the cause ot the deceased’s death. Airs. Thompson had travelled to Auckland on her usual •weekly visit, to friends in the city. Leaving Papatoetoe about mid-day. It, was her custom to return on the 5.10 train from Auckland, which reaches Papatoetoe on route for Papakura at 5.42. No other train passes over the track where the deceased was found between 5.42 and the time she was discovered on the line. The engine of the train due to leave Papatoetoe for the city at 6.35 does, however, traverse this track. The discovery of the woman's hat on the track about 160 yards north of the spot where Airs. Thompson was found, was made this morning, lit is thought, the unfortunate woman may have been searching the track for her hat in the darkness, and had been knocked down by the engine as it proceeded over the loop line. CYCLIST’S FATAL INJURIES. AUCKLAND. Alay 10. Fatal injuries were sustained by Harry W. Williamson, a married man, employed by the Public Works Department at Gordonton, when the bicycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a motor lorry on the Cambridge Road at Hillcrest, last evening. Grimwood. a young man resident at the corner of Innes Road and Rutland Street, fell from a motor-cycle at Leithfiold Beach, this afternoon, when the cycle struck a patch of loose sand. As the result of a collision with a motor-ear, driven by a Maori and containing a number of native’s from lhe Ratana Pa, Joseph Arthur Massey, of Wanganui East, received severe head injuries, from which he died almost immediately. Massey was cycling along No. 1 line with companions on Saturday afternoon, and the car which struck him was travelling in the same direction. Mr. Cowan had just entered the dressing room to convey his congratulations to the members of the team when he collapsed, A doctor was called, and he was given every attention, but when taken to the hospital by an ambulance, life was pronounced extinct. The players and patrons were distressed when the news was confirmed, and flags were lowered to half mast. Mr. Cowan was born at Port Chalmers.
