RACK RENTING
IN LARGER CENTRES Government to Stop It c'Per Press Associatiou.) WELLINGTON, May 10. It is the definite intention of the Government to legislate immediately in the direction of putting a- stop to the exploitation of the tenants of rented homes. The Primo Alinister stated 10-day that legislation will lie introduced within the uexl few days. It would deal with rents both -before and after lhe passing of the Bill. At. the moment, flic legal members of Cabinet were investigating various relevant Aids with a view of drawing up a suitable measure for presentation to the house.
“We are getting communications from all other the Dominion that rents are jumping up unreasonably,” said Rt.. Hon. Air. Savage. “They may win in the first round, but we will win all the rest!”
He added emphatically, “when a fellow’s wa'gos go up 2s 6d, his rent goes up 7s 6d! This is the information that is coming to me. and we are going to stop it.” The Prime Alinister said that it seemed that the conditions were worse in Wellington than in Auckland. There were eases where landlords had been easy with tenants in the past, and where there would be a. justification for the restoration of the rent to the normal amount, but there was no justification fur the taking of rents to above that which was warranted by normal condi l ions. The Prime Alinister added that the matter was so urgent Ilfat the legislaion would be passed before the break in Parliament at the end of this month.
