During a general debate on the future of broadcasting in the House of Commons there was considerable discussion on a recommendation contained in the recent Ullswater report. The report recommended that private relay exchanges should be absorbed by the General Post Office and controlled by the British Broadcasting Corporation. There are at present 3GO of these exchanges and about 250,000 subscripers. These commercial organisations redistribute over a network various broadcast programmes, and often include broadcasts from foreign stations, advertising the commercial produce of British firms.
The broadcasting of advertisements is forbidden, and the Ullswater committee, which investigated the matter, expressed the view that the time had come for unification, and co-ordin-ated development in the hands of the Post Office. Critics of the relay system in the House of Commons expressed the view that if it was left in the hands of private enterprise the whole standard and purpose of broadcasting in Britain would be changed. The Government attitude has not yet been announced.
