KARAMEA FARMERS’ REQUESTS
WEL-IL-NGTON, April 30. Representations which have been marie for a grant of £45,000 to assist in th,, rehabilitation of the Karame-a farmers, whose properties were damaged by the 1929 earthquake, are now being considered bv the Government.
Tho proposal was mentioned in an urgent question, asked in the House of Representatives, this afternoon, by Mr. Holyoako. who sought information about, the decision of the Government.
The Prime Minister assured Air. Ilolyoake that the proposal had been considered by the Government, and ho hoped to be able to make a final reply within the next few days..
When the last Governm-cnt went out of office arrangements had been made to provide £45,000 to settlers in Karamea, provided they would find an additional £5.000 necessary for work, which includes repairs to dnma'fe done bv rivers. The settlers took tho attitude, however, that the Government should provide the full amount, because thev wore already heavily burdened with’taxation and expenses in cidental to losses, and would be unable to finance the loan necessary to raise£s,ooo. The representations made .o the Government have been along those linos. _______
