PARCEL POST

Big Increase POSTMASTER-GENERAL GRATIFIED. WELLINGTON, April 29. Tn an interview to-day’ the Hon. F. Jones (Postmaster-General), stated that the Post Office has had a very encouraging experience in connection with its revision of the parcels post rates, which, on the basis of last ■year’s business, involve at concession to users of approximately .£25,000 per annum. “Careful examination ol the parcels post business over a long period was made by my officers.” remarked the Postmaster-General, “with the object of analysing the costs of handling all classes of packages. This led to the ’conclusion that a substantial reduction in charges could be made, and that business would be so .stimulated thereby, that it could still be conducted. on a paying basis.” tf Thc first month >s experience ot the new rates and the more liberal conditions fully supports that view.. Business firms have shown appreciation ot the new scale by increasing their postings and a return of the daily’ average postings at the four chief centres of the Dominion provides ample evidence of the success of the new scale The particulars are as follow: Auckland: Old scale 684; new scale 1.238; increase 81 per cent. Wellington: Old scale 9/2; new scale 1.860; increase 92 per cent. Christchurch: Old scale 438; nev scale 832; increase 90 per cent. Dunedin: Old scale 309; new scale 548; increase 77 per cent. “It has been ascertained,’ concluded the Minister, “that equally o-ood results have been shown in many other centres, and there are two cases in which the business last month was double that of the average postings of parcels prior to the introduction of the reduced scale of charges.”
