Much regret was expressed this evening at the news that two local residents, .Messrs T. Coyle and W. Despite weeks of wet weather while deer stalking in South Westland, l .'aptain A. I leber-Percy, A.D.C., shot, two very line royals. One of them measured 44] inches, and was verv even, being far superior to the 15-pointer shot recently by Lord l.atymer who was stalking in the Haast region. The other head had a spread of 39] inches. Matty friends in this district will regret to hear of the death of Airs. Empson, wife of Air. C. C. Saywell; president, Mr. I), J. Evans; vice-p’r-esi-dents, Mesdames A. Diedrich, Afalloch. Messrs J. McGuire,’G. Walton, J. Taylor. W. Wilson, Robt. Ford, A. C. Newman and W. It was decided to ask the Borough Council for the use of No. 2 ground at Cass Square, and to open thr< season next Monday. A large increase in membership is expected. Harihari Winter Show takes place next Wednesday, at the local hall. It is proposed to make a presentation to Afr G. A. Perry, to commemorate his holding "of office as Mayor for a period of a quarter of a century. Last evening the Municipal Band, under All C. B. Ross, conductor, visited the •residence of the ikpiv'.r, and played a programme outside. Afr Richa r ls asked Air Perry to accept a small gift (a Loewe pipe) from the Band, as a token of their esteem and at the same time expressing the hoiw that he would be long spared to continue his good work to the community. Mr Ross, Air A. Parkhill and Mr D. McLeod -also spoke in appreciation of Mr Perry, the fact being mentioned that he was one guarantor for £450, to raise funds for a new set of instruments some years ago, and he has 'been a consistent and generous supporter of the Rand. Afr Perry suitably replied, and said the Band deserved the support of the town. The band sang “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.’’ A pleasant hour followed with songs, Airs Perry providing refreshments. Tn the debt ease published on Monday. in which judgment was given for F. J. Bade, the debtor, was T. Howard of Kuinara, not F. Howard. There was a large attendance of householders at Kokatahi, when seven were nominated for the Committee, and the following were elected: Messrs M. Wallace (chairman), N. Harris. C. Marshall, W. Houston and C. Woolhouse. At Woodstock, the following committee were elected: Messrs W. Willoughby (chairman), J. Corsan, J. Griffiths, E. J. Wells and R. C. Wells (Secretary). .At Kanieri, the committee was re-elected as follows: Messrs R. Chesterman, R. Harvey, E. Howat. A. R. Elcock, F. Selby (ChairmanSecretary). At Kaihinu, the following were elected unopposed to the committee: Messrs A. Richards. IT. Finch, J. Finch, A. Edwards and E. Edwards. Mr A. Richards was elected chairman and Mr 11. Finch, secretary and treasurer.

Westland Rugby Sub-Union decided nt its usual meeting to proceed with the floodlighting of Cass Square pri-. vided the Borough Council sanctions this. The cost of two powerful lights was submitted as £l5. The Sub-Union having no funds, Messrs Dowell and Stopforth offered to guarantee £lO on its behalf, the clubs to be asked to subscribe as follows: Kiwi £3, Excel sibr £3, and Pirates £2. The following classifications w re agreed to: Senior.; to junior grade: A. Dale, R. McCarthy. L. George. The cases of D. Tainui and J. 11. Smith were deferred. A. Turley was granted a transfer from Kiwi to Excelsior. Pirate third grade team asked for weight to be altered from 9 st. 7 llis., to lOst. The matter’ of attention to Arahura ground was left to Mr Webb to attend to. Saturday’s games are: Seniors: Stars v. Excelsior Cass Square, No. 1 ground, 2.45 p.m. (J. Rutland); Kiwi v. Blaketown, at Greymouth. Juniors: Kiwi v. Excelsior at Cass Square (R. Collett) 3 p.m. Ross v. Pirates, at Woodstock (■!• Bannister), 3 p.m.; School v. Arahura, at Arahura (C. Harper), at 3 p.m.; Kokatahi, a bye. Third grade: Excelsior v. Ross, at Ross, at 3 p.m. (W. Flaherty); School v. Pirates, at Cass Square (J. Coulson), at 1.30 p.m.

At Ross Women’s Institute meeting, Mis Peebles presided, Mrs W. Flaherty was appointed delegate to the Dominion Conference of Women’s Institutes, to be held in Dunedin. A competition for the best arranged afternoon tea of three recipes resulted: Mrs O’Connell Ist, Miss M. MeMullan 2nd, Miss N. MeMullan 3rd. Mrs O’Connell was presented with the competitions trophy for the month. A demonstration of smocking and knitting was given by Mesdames Byrne, ami Chairman and Miss T. Minehan. This was followed by community singing with Me*danies Blunt and Martin at the piano Supper was served by Mesdames Blacklow, Detlaff, Haddock and Silver Ross Borough Council, at its meeting decided to pay casual labour at .the rate of 14s per day. It was decided to make further representation re. having a rail car placed on the Ross-Greyznouth line; that as from April ],st, extra remuneration be no

longer paid the Town Clerk for un employment work; that the following works receive immediate attention: Cleaning of watertables in Lower Aylmer Street, repairs to Donnelly’a Creek footbridge, Tramway Street be graded and gravelled, engagement of Public Works grader for a few days to trim up the streets where required. The finance committee presented ae counts to the amount of £254 Os 7d. which were passed for payment. Jt was resolved to make, application to have the road from Post Office to Bailwav, declared a main highway. The Mayor (Mr J. Murdoch) moved and Cr. R. J. Scott seconded, that a charge of £2 per annum be now charged for all bowser pumps on road-side or footpath.—Motion lost. Mr Jas. O’P>rien. M.P., wrote re. Kanieri bridge. The Chamber of Commerce, Greymouth wrote in favour of diverting grant for Kanieri bridge to completion of a coastal road from Hokitika to Ruatapu. Cr. R. Scott thought it would not be advisable to convert the Hokitika railway bridge into a general traffic bridge. Cr. May thought, 'they should confine agitation to completion of the. road to Ruatapu. He moved and Cr. Scott seconded, that the Chamber of Commerce he informed this Council has already taken action similar to that suggested by them.—Carried. Cr. Upjohn moved that if a meeting is held of local body representatives at Hokitika, to discuss matters in connection with the coastal road, the Mayor and Cr. May, represent this Council at same. Seconded hv Cr. W. J. Blacklow and carried. The Valuer-General advised a revaluation of Ross Borough, would bo made at an i early date. It was reported the Valuer had-' already started this work. The treasurer notified remittance of goldfields revenue 'for February and March, £BlO and £l6 7s. The Grey County Council forwarded £49 9s 2d. proportion of heavy traffic fees.
