Racing Notes

Oratory’s Record: Although she had not raced beyond six furlongs prior to thc< Great Noiti era Oaks, Oratory carried S-10 111 tnar race and won in 2min 32sec, ] ' econl for a mile and a-half for the Ellerslie course. Long Run of TOuts”: The New Zealander Master LrietQ, whe was runnor-up to Silver Ring m the Cumberland Stakes last week, won the A.J.C. Plate at Randwick a year ago, but has not succeeded in winning a race since. J. S. Shaw’s Team: J S. Shaw intends to spell M Huat.i and Princess Rawene. They have been busy for some time, and they should come back in the spring benefited. bj a rest. M‘Heath, in particular, should be a better horse next season Shaw * team for the winter will include S < fox and Royal Gallant, two horses partial to soft ground.

Recorded Fielding Times: The Hawera trained One Vhetu, covered himself with glory at the recent Fielding meeting. Not only did he w!m the principal races on both days, but he also created new course records for both events. In the Cup he cut out the mile and a-quarter in the ie markably fast time of 2min. 4 2 '^. c ‘ ’’ clipping nearly a second ofCourt’s time in 1930. In the Easter Handicap on the second day ho lowered the previous best time for nine furlongs by two-fifths of sceonc. Great, credit is due to his trainer, J. Fryer, for the fine improvement worked in the last few months. '1 he gelding scored his first win this season m the Mokau Hack Handicap at New Plymouth, and since them he has t\on races at Opunake, Trent ham. Awapuni and Fielding. In all he six firsts since the beginning Ot loin ruary. ami the handicappers may not have takem his measure as yet. He* is a four-year-old by Sandstar from the Kilbronev mare Kilcoo, a haltsister to the useful mare Eka. and he is so far the best of his sire’s progeny to race.

Successful Sire: . Having reached his twenty-third year. Hurry On, unbeaten aS a racehorse and famous as a sire, was destroyed in England a few weeks ago. He' cost the late Lord Woolavmgton only 500 guineas as a yearbng. He could not run as a two-year-old on ae count o f unsoundness but he won alt his six engagements at th ••co years, these including the substitute b.. Begor and the Jockey Club Cup. He sired three Derby winners—Captain Cuttie, Coronach and Call Boy while Toboggan nnd Pennyconicquick won the Oaks, Plack and Cresta Run the One Thousand Guineas and Coronach the St. Lcger. Up to the end of last

season his stock had woo £304,152. One of his sons Hunting Song, has been a great stud success in New Zealand; while another. Lord Warden has Custos this season to suggest that hc< is going to sire good horses. Streamline:

Streamline has uoiv won three in a row, and down south they exepect him to win a Grand National Hurd’c some day. He is a half-brother to Fast Passage. Walton Park:

Walton Park appears to be improving gradually. SuD’Sje: iSunep continues to be just good enough to Hatter and then deceive. One with a Future: Swordstiek is heralded as one with a gilt-edged future. He is a ihree-year old by Rapier, Egmont:

Egmont, beaten a short head in the Sydney Cup. was the top-priced yearling at 850 gs at the Trentham sales two vears ago. He is by Limond from Imprudence. Much Travelled: * Queen of Song’s Easter double — Riverton Cup and Great Autumn Handicap—is unique. She had to travel 800 miles within three days. Smart Sort: Chief Ranger is headed for promotion on a grand scale. They could not make him' a gallop at Riccarton. Stolen March: Iff breeding, looks, and galloping ability count for anything. Stolen March should become a real racehorse. Coat of Arms: Coat of Arms is a smart galloper, but youthful lightweights do u«t get the best out, of him. Golden Sheila: Golden Sheila, ran the last half-mile of the Great Northern Champagne Stakes in 47 3-ssec, s 0 her win was no Huke. Youssipof: Sir Thomas Wiltord’s Va'.ratapa winner, Youssipof, is to do his fiexracing at the Carterton meeting on Mav 23. His recent outings have served to harden him u>. ;■-><! future prospects look to be very bright. He : is a gelding who should s-r'ay a middle distance later on.

A Promising Sort: Free Gold, the unexpected winner of the two-year-oid race on the second ilny of the Wairarapa meeting, looks like making a good horse. He hau .mt raced prior to this meeting, ami his- quick advancement, to the winning list suggests much better things in the futuie. lie is a well-grown, solid looking customer, and ha,s the breeding tn back up his looks, being.by General Latour from Zarisse. 'by I’alml.n from the Chaucer mare :\lazaInika. He was bred by h:s owner, Mi T, Newman. There is every probn bi'lity that he will develop into a good three-year-old. Silver Ring: It will be interesting to read the opinions of Australian wr.ters —especially those who persis-entl;. ■‘knock” New Zealand form —regard ing the latest /doings of Sliver Ring, who toyed with the opposition in his lasi- two races at Sydney, ami shoiiid have Avon one or two others ( a

■the Timaru Herald). The decline of Peter Pan cleared the way for Silver Ring, but the Australian champion at his best never heal, his field any easier tha n the Silverado gelding did in his last two races. It is no exaggeration to say that. Silver Ring improved .1011)—probably a stone —this , season, and as he seems to be holding hi" form, he Avill be a menace to the Australian w.f.a. horses next spring. Chile: According lo his trainer (P. Burgess), Chile is not to do the Great Northern trip this year. He is to race next at Marton, with pox'.mi and Otaki following, then on to lin Wellington and Grand National meet ings. Burgess mentions that' a report that Chile had one or two falls last year is* erroneous, as lie. lias mv?

yet. fallen, though lie dropped him one day in a steeples at Egmont.

Greek Shepherd’s Winnings; Greek Shepherd heads the money winning list.' among the New Zealand three-year-olds this season. IDs earnings total £2957,. the result of eigh,t wins and four seconds. Hi.’ list of successes include the Great Northern Derby, Great Northern St. Leger and Awapuni Cup.

Golden King’s Wins: A North island writer, commenting on P. T. Hogan’s feat with Queen of Song, revives an old myth when he stated that “the veteran sportsman made history years ago when he trained Golden King, who won 55 races and was successful up to the time he was 17 years of «ge, ” (says the Timaru Herald). No horse in New Zealand has won 55 races at totalisator meetings, ami all ’hat the Turf Registers credit to Golden King is 22 wins. He did not race after he was 15;. and, though he Avon once at this .age, it Avas his only success later than his tenth year. Golden Ivng Avas la hardy gelding, and Avon 10 races as a sevc'n-yea.r-old, and had a record that does not require embellishment. He Avas one of the Fairy Benzie family, and iin. his first season was trained by J. J. Lewis for his breeder, Mr 11. T. Smith. In any chse,, Golden King Avas not the most notable horse t',rained by I’. T. This distinction belongs to Rorke’s Dreft or Songbird.

Trotting Notes At Dunedin: Two members of H. Frost’s Victoria Park team'. Belle Derby and Superb, figure amongst the horses handicapped for the Forbury Trotting Club’s meeting which opens on April 30 and are likely to make the trip, later racing at tiie Oamaru meeting. (Belle Derby is on 12 yards, amongst a large and smart field in the Beach Handicap 2.18 class, one mile whilst Superb is oil the front of a 3.17 class, one mile and three-eighths in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, for which 25 horses were nominated.

An Embryo Champion: Graham Direct acquitted himself like

a champion in the All Aged Stakes and. favoured by the sloav pace set by the three-year-olds. Avas able to collect £lOO of the stake. His 3min .14 4-ssee Avas much the fastest run of the day. Did Not Stay: Nobleman’s two efforts over lavo miles at Addington recently Avere poor It is said that Im can stay, but he won’t. Outclassed: Little Reta Avas outclassed at the Easter meeting. She does not trot as well at Addington as she does on other courses. Not Impressive : Self’s efforts over two miles at the Easter meeting Avere far from' impressive. He had everything to his liking but caved in badly over the last half mile. Consistent: The Auckland pacer Bonny Azure, one of F. J. Smith's team, lias started 10 times this season for nine Avins and a third. Bright Prospects: Helen’s Bay showed more stamina in the Harvest Handicap at Addington than ever she has done, and on her performance in that race she was very unlucky to be beaten. She was last in a field of 10 and had a lot of ground to make up Avith six furlongto go, yet she got Avithin half a length l of the Avinner and her cflicial time ror the twe miles was 4min 34 3-ssec. The break she made soon after the start cost her three seconds at least. On her latest showing, she has only to become reasonable at the start to Avin more than one race.

Reylena: Reyleua a win.ner at the Westland T.O. meeting has done well Avith age, and she should Avin again.

Cantata: Cantata left the m'ark on time in the Westland T.C. Handicap and that was the end of it all. Those Avho knoAV Avhat Trireme can do Avill agree that Cantata Avill bear remembering. G'ing’er Jack:

Ginger Jack has been an unlucky novice. The Jack Potts—Okoura gelding will keep. Shrewdie:

Shrewdie won at the Westland i meeting after being a boomed failure in several previous starts. The time he took does not say he is extra special. A Track Record: I Brigadier’s 2 min 4? 2-ssec for a mile and a quarter at the Westland trots is a track winning record, and some fine pacers preceded him. Dollar Maid: Dollar Maid, by Great Bingen—Miss Worth, is a trotting filly bred to be much better than she is. Time mav tell. Lettie Guy: Lottie Guy looks like having another turn shortly. Moerangi: Moerangi, who has now- won two races in four starts, was practically given away last season. He is a brother to Bracken, a pacer with a two-mile' record of 4min 21 4-sscc. Lynworthy: Everybody has a good word for Lynworthy. He will probably oblige again at Epsom Imposing Record: (Bonny Azure is compiling a Gloaming record, and from the front of the Adams Cup at Auckland she should make' it nine on end. Only a Pony: Eastern Prince is only a pony, and short distances will always find him at his best. San Michele: San Michele is ono of the few- Rey de Oro trotters, and was aged before he began to race. Oamaru’s Winter Meeting: Nominations for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s ■winter meeting will close to-day. Starting Times: At the Forbury Park meeting on Thursday and Saturday of next week the first race is timed to start st. H. 45 a.m., and the last at 3.55 p.m. The Early Favourites: Grand Mogul is one of the early favourites for the King Edward Handi-

cap. and Graham Direct for >h o i<’ly ing Handicap.

Moerangi’s Handicap: In the Bayfield Handicap, at Forbury Park, Moerangi should be on 84 yards, not 12. Assured of Support:

Nell Grattan will carry solid support if she is harnessed up at Forbury Bark. She looks nicely placed on the 'irnit of the Domain Handicap.

.A, Pronjising Pacer: Among those nominated for the Fia> burv Park meeting is Stirling Lady, one of the most promising pacers Southland has si'cn for many a day. She looks certain io be racing nt Addington in a season or two.

Brilliant Four-year-olds: Gamble and Graham Direct are both assessed at 4min. 26sec. They are the first four-year-olds in Netv Zealand to reach that line. Indianapolis did not qualify for it until the beginning of his live-year-old season, and ar Buoy did not get there until three months later.
