NELSON CREEK SPORTS
SUCCESSFUL MEETING Bell Wins Underhand Chop for the first lime for a number of years a sports meeting was held at Nelson Creek, on SaAirdtiy, and proved to be a highly successful galhet. ing. A large number of visitors were present from surrounding country districts and from (Ireymout.h amt Hokitika. Chief interest centred round the chopping event.q all of which were keenly contested. The Maiden Chop was won by E. Tuck, of Nelson Creek, although the judges’ decision did not meet with approval. Sullivan, who chopped well, appeared to be an easy winner, by a matter of seconds. Tuck sportingly suggested an. appeal against the decision of the judges,, but Mr Sullivan did not adopt this course. The Upright Chop was won by W. Blackmun, of Blackball* and the main event, the Underhand Chop, of .15 inches, resulted in n popular vintory for R. Bell, of Inangahua Junction. Sullivan appeared to be. somewhat un lucky in this event also, for ;when practically certain of a share of the prize money, he left his log. Kawahaka (Cedar) logs of very good qualify, all practically free from knots, were used in the chop, ping events. No doubt, tin 1 soil nature of the wood had an ell’ect on the times registered, for these are in most cases exceptional times for the event's. .Entries for 'other events were no' very numerous,, but in most cases there was good competition. High land dancing competitions brought entrants from Greymouth am] Hokitika, and the judge had great diili culty in placing a number of the competitors. Tho judges for the chopping events were Messrs W. l-'isher, J. Blackmore and J. Tibbles, whilst Mr D. S. Moffitt efficiently carried out his arduous duties as starter. Mr R. Collett (Hokitika) judged the dancing events, and had the assistance of Mr 0. McLean- (steward)., and Piper I). Cullen. Tho day’s events were run off well t'o time, and reflect great credit on the Nelson Creek Ofi'n-itiLs. The success of the,, meeting ian be regarded as proof that a gathering o! this nature would be an attractive annual event, at Nelson Creek, The results were as follows: — Alaiden Chop, 13in Underhand, of £l5 ((including I’lnnib .‘icm): l'’ir.< heat. —(I . .Robinson 1, J.
