THE MONOWAI

LATE DISMISSAL OF A MAN (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, February 11. The departure of the Monowai from Auckland for Sydney, was delayed for over an hour, owing to trouble with the crew. With 403 passengers, mail and cargo, the vessel was ready to sail at 5.30’ p.m. The crew, however, refused to take the vessel to sea until they had discussed the case of one of the men who had been paid off late in the afternoon. Discussion continued in the forecastle until 6.40 p.m., when the men decided to allow the vessel to sail. After the gangway had been lowered, and the mooring lines cast off, I here was a .further delay, as a man who was farewelling friends, was still on the vessel. The Monowai had to be manoeuvred alongside the wharf until the man was able to disembark down a rope ladder from the fore deck to the wharf. The vessel then sailed.
