M.C.C. V. POVERTY BAY Visitors 92 Ahead ON FIRST INNINGS. (Per Press Association). GISBORNE, February U. Excellent weather conditions prevailed this morning for the commencement of tho match between Marylebone and Poverty Bay. Holmes won the toss and the Englishmen took first use of a wicket which had responded well to special preparation, but the wearing qualities of which appeared doubtful. S:ms opened the visitors’ score with a single, but a few balls later was clean bowled by Blathwayt. Hardstaff jonied Parks and by noon the pair, had carried the score to 38. LATER. M.C.C. continued to score briskly after lunch, MitcheH-mncß scoring especially freely, and eventually being the fourth out for 43, with the total at 139. Human followed, and attacked the bowling, but lost Parks, who played very* solidly 'for, 45, at 141. Human then hit out at everything,, and the score mounted rapidly to 206, when the closure was applied. Blathwayt', a fast medium trundlor, with a deceptive swerve, did best of the local bowlers.

With just under two hours to play, Poverty Bay .opened. Boon scoring five off the first , three balls, but eventually going for 12. Four, wicket's were down for 26, but ja fine fighting innings by Reeves, who played changeless cricket, took the total to 105, all being out just before stumps were drawn. Reeves hit three fours in his 51. and frequently found gaps to the off for slashing drives. Won By Wellington (Per Press WELLINGTON, February 11. In brilliant weather, at Basin 'Reserve, Auckland started the final up hill fight for the Plunket Shield, Posties and Wallace resuming. The wicket had dried out thoroughly, but the slight uncertainty promised interesting cricket. Wallace reached 50 with a neat turn to leg off Parsloe, and in the next over Postles scored four to» square leg off Griffiths. In Griffiths’ next. Wallace smashed him past point for four, but the next ball was brilliantly taken by Lamason at mid-off. The partnership jnelded 77. Hook came, but his stay was short. After one his wicket was skittled by Parsloe. Garrard, the newcomer, had a life, but scored briskly. Postles reached the half century with a single, but just after was smartly stumped by Blandford off Griffiths. Cowie camo in, and was caught at square leg by Symes. Further scores:—

Pearson turned Griffiths for a beautiful 4 to leg, but Edmunds, the newcomer, was caught at fine leg by Ell off Parsloe. Andrews, the last man, was run out by Griffiths. Though Auckland secured a first innings lead. .Wellington avoided an outright defeat with comparative case in the inter-provincial cricket match at the Basin Reserve to-day, and won the Plunket Shield. Wellington beat Canterbury and Otago outright,, and lost on the first innings to Auckland, scoring 18 points. Auckland scored an outright win over Otago, and beat Canterbury and Wellington on the first innings, scoring 16 points. To-day, Auckland, replying to Wellington’s first ininngs total of 152. made 235.

A declaration in an effort to force an outright win was not made, the visiting captain preferring to let his batsmen get runs quickly or get out. Wellington batted all the afternoon for 308 for five wickets, a feature being a great stand of 201 for the third wicket by Lamason, who played a brilliants
