WOMAN’S INJURIES. AWARDED HEAVY DAMAGES. (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND, November 11. A motor accident in Karangahape Road, lasi' Christmas Eve,, when a motor-car charged along a crowded footpath, was recalled in a claim for damages brought bet ore Mr Justice Fair and a jury, in the Supreme Cour*. Plaintiff was Mrs Maria Ecclestone, of Auckland (Mr Goulding), who claimed £3,500 general and £1,073 (special damage.^/making £4,573 in all, from James Killen, farmer, of Matangi, Cambridge (Mr West). Defendant wa s in charge of the motor-car that struck Mrs Ecclestone, and it was alleged that the accident was due to his negligence, particularly in starting the car while the gears were engaged, and in failing to apply the brakes. Among other injuries, plaintiff claimed to have suffered severe shock, dislocation, ami a . fracture of the hip, fracture of the pelvis, and a compound fracture of the lower leg. It might still be necessary to amputate the leg. Summing tin,, His Honour said the object of the law was to put the person who was injured back to nearly as possible i n tihe same position financially before the accident. The pain suffered must also be taken into account. The jury returned after an hour, to award £2,500 general damages. £260 for expenses already incurred. and £294 for probable future expenses. By direction of His Honour, the third item was incorporated with the first. Judgment was given for £2.794 making a total of £3,054, with euUs, to p lai miff. Mr West wa s granted seven days in which to apply for a new trial. u u the ground that the damages were excessive. AUCKLAND CENTENARY. AUCKLAND November 11. A /widely representative conference attended by over 260 delegates from local bodies churches sporting and other bodies, was held in AuckaJud to-night to consider the tentative plans for the celebrating of the Auckland centenary iu 1940.
A report by the Mayor Mr Ernest Davis outlined the possible lines which such celebrations might take. Mr Davis said he proposed to represent to the Government the need for co-ordination in all centennial celebrations throughout New Zealand so that by equitable distribution of feature events and orderly arrangement of d'ate schedules visitors and New Zealanders would be able to attend all or any of the celebrations.
Referring to the suggestion that Wellington should hold an international exhibition Mr Davis said he thought no one would challenge Wel-
lington’s claim to this fear. up*. However, if thrt exhibition was to be held iit /would be most desirable from Auckland’s point of view that it should .be held in the final quarter rather than at th. e beginning of 1940 as a. magnificent climax to a national commemoration. The conference was adjourned to March. GRAFTON BRIDGE SUICIDE (Per Press Association). AUCKLAND November, 12. David .John.
