BRITISH UNEMPLOYED
STILL NEAR TWO MILLION. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 9. The progressive rise in the numbers in employment and lab in the numbers of unemployed continued in August Since January, 1935, there had been a decrease in the number of unemployed of over 377,000, and in the whole’ period since 1921, the first year for which comparable statistics are available, the reduction of the last several months has been exceeded only in the corresponding periods of 1922 and 1923. The Ministry of Labour estimates that at August’ 26th, there was approximately 10,424 000 insured persons aged 16 to 64 i n employment in Great Britain. This is 43,000 more -fhan on July 22nd, and 244.000 more than a vear before at the same date.
Numbers of unemployed persons on registers in Britain totalled 1,947 964, comprising 1,533 259 wholly unemp’oyed. 334,419 temporarily laid off. and 80.286 normally in casual employment The total was 24 977 ’ess than on July 22nd, and 188 614 less than a year before. The month of August always shows an increase in juveniles unemployed, accounted for by the registration of boys and girls who left at the end of the summer term. Last month, there was an increase of nearly 22.000 in the numbers of unemployed juveniles, and allowing for fhat increase the number of unemployed men and women* actually decreased nearly 47.000.
