(Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, September 10. A u interesting addition to the Alexander Turnbull library is the painting oi a woman’s head by Samuel Butler, author of Urewhon. The picture is being presented by Mr W. D. Ferguson, of SUverstream. It was given by Butler to William Sefton Moorhouse, in the early sixties, and was inherited by a relative of Mr Ferguson. NEW PLYMOUTH* September 10. The presence of mind of Constable L Quin saved the passengers on the Auckland-New Plymouth, express last night from possible disaster. About 11 p.m., passengers in the leading car noticed a loud knocking, which increased, and the passengers were so alarmed that the constable applied the emergency brake. The cause of the accident was the slipping of a tyre. Members of the train crew said that if the constable had delayed Lis action even a minute the chances were that the whole train would have leapt from the rails and piled into a heap of wreckage. The train was delayed for five hours. CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Two years ago, Keith Rodney Minson, 23, storeman, stole a parked car, and then £tole a set of number plates, and ailixed them to the car, which he altered in appearance. Last year, and again this year, he stole number plates. A few days ago. a constable noticed the stolen plates attached to a car. He followed the vehicle and arrested Minson, who pleaded guilty, to-day, io -the theft of a car valued at £95 10s, and three sets of number plaites, driving without a license, driving a ear without assigned number plates, and using an unregistered car. > Minson was committed for sentence o u the major charge, and was remand ed sine die on the others. BLENHEIM. September 10. A strange hold-up is reported from Blenheim aerodrome, where 5. J, Busch, Canterbury Aero Club’s commercial pilot, is, on account of bad weather, stranded with an air cargo of 5501b5. of whitebait, and is faced with the prob 'em whether to sell it on the limited Blenheim market, which is already well stocked with the local article, or hang on i nthe hope that the weather will clear to enable him to land the consignment in Christchurch in good order and condition. Busch left Karamea for Christchurch yesterday, on the second of a series of flights, carrying whitebait to the Canterbury metropolis, but bad weather necessitated his crossing to Blenheim, where he landed late in the af ternoon. To-day, though the weather in Blenheim is fine, after heavy rain, conditions to the south preclude a flight to Christchurch, while Wellington is also unworkable by aircraft. This afternoon whitebait was shipped to Wellington via the Tamahine. DUNEDIN, September 10. Burglars during the week-end entered three adjoining shops in the centre of the ctiy. From one shop £4l) was taken from a cash box, from another seventeen suit lengths valued at £34, and from a <tliird £3 in silver WELLINGTON. September 10. The conference of the secretaries branch of the Electric Power Boards elected as president Mr K. W. Eglinton; secretary, G. E. Fowler. A papawas presented by R. P.
