(Our Own Correspondent.) Plunket Society; WESTPORT, September ]O. Miss Harkness presided a,t the usual month y meeting of the local branch of the Plunket Society, held last evening, and those present wore Mesdames George, Bennie, Barnett,, Hagedorn, and the secretary Mrs M. Neil. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Mesdames Bruce. Mclntyre, Hansen, Enright and Holdgate. The president referred to the death of Mrs Williams, an active committee worker, and it iwas resolved that a letter of sympathy he forwarded to Mr Williams. The secretary was also instructed to forwarl a letter of sympathy to Mrs J. Phibbs in connection with the death of her mother. Mrs Johnstone. The resignation of Mrs G. Elley, who has loft Westport to take up permanent residence in Wellington, was received with regret. The annual subscription lists were distributed amongst members, and are to be returned on Friday, 13th inst. It was decided that the rest rooms be opened daily in future at 9 a.m. Mesdames Bennie and Barnett 'were appointed a visiting commit4e e . for September. Miss Harkness was thanked for a donation of a chair Gold Tax: The chairman of the Addison’s Flat Goh] Mining Company, Mr G M. Power, has been in communication for some time with mining .organisations in other centres, with the object of making some move to have the go’d ‘ax abolished. With this in view, he has convened a meeting, to be held in thp. County Chambers on Friday next, and it is to be hoped the attendance will be large, as the question is one of vital importance. Buller Rugby Union:

Mr F. Keating was in .the chair at the usual weekly meeting of the Buller Rugby Union, held last evening. Old Boys juniors were granted permission to travel to Hokitika, on September 14, and Ohl Boys thirds permission to play at Greymouth on September 21. Old Boys juniors were also given permission to play a friendly match with Kiwi (Hokitika) on September 21. Lt was agreed to advise West Coas 4 ( ' Union that no chal’enge would bo made for th.e. Newman Shie’d this season, and the union objects to Inangiihua Union being allowed to combine when same privilege- is not extended to othior districts. The manager .of ihe Buller primary schools’ t’eam was granted expenses as included in statement, and it was decided to thank West Coast Union for hospitality extended to the boys at Greymou‘,h. A letter from New Zealand Union re nominations for South Isand t am was handed to the selectors. Mr Hammond was asked to arrange a primary schools’ game as a curtain-raiser to next Saturday’s Seddon Shield match. All business houses are to be asked tp close for tha game and the Municipal Band are to be invited to be present. The Buller team are to assemble at the Albion Hotel at J. 45 on Saturday under the management of Mr P. Ryan. It was arranged for thp, country members of the team to assemble on Wednesday evening, and town members to be also present for -training purposes. Mr Dalton was appointed iocal manager for the Nelson team. The secretary’s action in cancelling the Ranger v. Stockton Prince Memorial match was endorsed. Mr V. Smith was appointed referop. for the curtain-raiser. The names of J. Burt and J. Kirkwood were added to the S’or junior list. Mr T. Douglas was appointed assistant gate keeper, and Messrs Ridsdale. Dey and Stephenson w< re asked to patrol the fences dur ing thp. match. Nelson team are to bi- accommodated aV the Black and White Hotel. Messrs Da’ton and Keating were appointed to interview Mr and Miss Morgan re use of Theatre Royal for ben-'-fit concert for Mr Fairley who was injured in the Mar borough Soddon Shield ma.tlch. Benefit Whippet Meeting:

The Buller Whippet Racing Club will hold a spcieial benefit meeting at Gloucester Park o n Sunday next, the proceeds of which will be devoted to t<he Fairley Benefit Fund. Mumm gave an interesting demonstration of wicker stool making, for which sh H was accorded a vote of tblinks. Mesdames Mulholland and Miss J. Bennett wer 6 hostesses.

Shipping: The Titoki sailed yesterday tor Nelson. The Poolta is due here on Friday from Auckland. The Omana leaves Auckland tor Westport ,to-day. Th e Rata sails this evening for Wellington. The Canopus sailed last evening tor Wellington. The Kanna is due here shortly from Greymouth. There were no arrivals in port yesterday. Victoria Theatre To-night is the long-awaited opening of ihe popular cinema, New Victoria Theatre, and aertainly it is a transformation. One could hardly believe it possible that such, a big alteration could be made in the (time. The feature attraction is “Mister Cinders, a British comedy, with four snappy miisiea 1 numbers, the stars being Clifford Mollison and Zelma O’Neill. “Mister Cinders” ran as a successful stage play in London for two years. It is a feast of glorious entertainment—the happiness picture of 1935. and it is approved for Universal Exhibition with excellent talkie shorts. Box plan for reserves at Morgan’s near theatre. THURSDAY NIGHT. In addition to the above programme on Thursday night, wi'l be the personal appearance on the stage of Mr Roy Dixon the Knight of the Wheel, who will relate some of his experiences while o n his travels. Mr Dixon travels by cycle and carries a pack weighing 213 lbs., including a type-writer and a radio receiving set.
