At the Hospital Board meeting Messrs T. W. Duff E. Park, J. A Murdoch, E. W. Heenan, W. Jeffries,* H. T. Parry. A. K. Elcock W. H. Evenden and W. A. Jamieson attended. Messrs Jeffries and Murdoch objected to a minute of a special meeting recording and payment of £6B, monies representing amounts deducted from Dr. Wilson’s salary on accouu* of holidays. Air Murdoch contending the doctor had not given the required notice to the Board, as provided by the bydaws. Tht‘ chairman said neither objector attended the special meeting which was the p<ace to have objected to 'the passing of the amounts. Mr Murdoch asked that his dissent be noted. The Treasurer’s statemen’, showed receipts for August amounting to £1176 18s 6d, expenditure £1253 15s 9d, debit £339 15s 9d. Accounts amounting to £1139 were passed for payment. The Medical Superintendent' reported: Patients in hospital on July 31st, 47. Admitted during Aug ust 70. Total treated during August 117. Discharged cured 48; discharged relieved 7; died. 8; remaining in hospital on August 31st, 54. The Matron ieported: Highest number of patients on any one day, 55; lowest number. 45; average occupied beds per day, 50.2; number of operations 42; number of X-rays 15; massage and electrical treatments, 292. Nurse Gillespie returned from Christchurch Hospital on August 24th. Nurse Traue returned from Gisborne on Augusit' 15th. Nurse Neville commenced training at Christchurch Hospital on August 24»th. Nurses J. and M. Ward are on annual leave, also E. Freitas and N. Wylie. Nurse Archer is on sick leave also Misses Maureen Martin and Judith Ditely. Nurse J. Bansgrove, not wishing to continue training, has tendered her resignation as from August 14th. Miss Edna Rawlings is relieving the wardsmaids. and authority to engage her for spring cleaning was asked. Stewart, Johnston, Hutt’on and Campbell forwarded a cheque of £5OO from the estate of th elate Joseph But’ler and stated the balance would be forthcoming when the residue of the estate is realised. The Hospital Boards’ Association, asked if the Board would

subscribe towards the cost ot the damages awarded in a recent case against a Hospital Board, and cost of appealing to the Privy Council. .On adviee of Mr Murdoch, it' was resolved that the Board do not do so„ but consider taking out a policy covering the patients the Board considering the public will demand protection against carelessness in treatment in hospitals. Dr. Wilson forwarded £l5 towards purchase of a prostatie eleetrone. Mr Murdoch asked what funds are now in baud. He knew of an offer ot' £5O The secretary read offers amounting to €96. The chairman said he and Mr Murdoch had interviewed the Member for the District, and the Minister on tho question of the purchase of the in strumen-t'. Mr Murdoch said no encouragement was giyen . The Board had £lOO in sight, and they could raise the balance. Mr Parry wished iv know if the Department will allow the Board -t'o instal it if the Board procured. it. If was considered no diffi culty would be experienced. Mr Jef fries expressed the belief that there would be no difficulty in securing the amount to purchase the instrument. A vote ot thanks was accorded Messrs Duff and Murdoch for their work in Wellington. Sketch plans for the alterations and additions to -the hospital, were laid before the members. The etimated costs were:—Alterations £2100; -nurses’ quarters £5300, and the children’s ward £6900. Total £14,300. kt was resolved -t'o hold consideration over until next week. Mr Evenden reported that- Di; Menzies of Kumara, desired an, increase of salary. It was suggested that the doctor make his application in writing.
