SEXUAL CASES Invercargill Convictions S' (Per Press Association) INVERCARGILL, August 13. In the Supreme Court to-day, Thomas Colvin Turnbull, single, aged 28 years, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 16 years, and was sentenced to nine months’ hard labour. Three years’ imprisonment with hard labour was the sentence imposed upon Victor Lewis Fluerty, aged 52, when, having pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to a charged of incest, he appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court to-day. After 35 minutes’ retirement the jury returned a verdict of guilty at the conclusion of the trial of Jean Cartwright, a married woman, who had pleaded not guilty to a charge of having unlawfully used an instrument for the purpose of procuring a miscarriage. She was remanded in custody for sentence to-morrow. BREACH OF PROMISE. AN ENGAGEMENT BY CABLE. WELLINGTON, August 13. An award of £B5 damages in a breach of promise action w«s made in a judgment of Mr Justice Blair, in a case at .the Supreme Court to-day. The plaintiff was Doris May Brindle, who claimed £250 general, and £l2O special damages, from George Harrison. He became engaged, by cable, with plaintiff in England, arranging for her to come out, but afterwards he abruptly broke off the arrangement, again, by cable. The plaintiff came out to New Zealand, and the special damage claims included the cost of her passage, trousseau, bedding linen, and a ease of cutlery. VALUELESS CHEQUES. WELLINGTON, August 13. Douglas Arthur Fletcher Brewer pleaded guilty to two charges of issuing valueless cheques, and was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. A police statement showed that he was an old offender. A local bank would not allow him to open an account, so he got a man to open one for him, under the name of Stevens.
