Regent Theatre, which will be finally screened to-night. This is an excellent programme which combines comedy with tense drama. TO-MORROW—“BELLA DONNA’’ There is no doubt about “Bella Donna’’, which commences at to-mor-row’s matinee, being one of the most popular stories written. Its success as a novel and stage play was followed by the screen version in which Pola Negri played the title role and again it was filmed as a “silent” with Pauline Frederick as “Bella Donna.” Although this is her first screen role. Alary Ellis gives a splendid performance as “ Bella Donna.” This fine stage actress had definite ideas as to how the part should be played. She determined to rouse sympathy for the character and not to make her merely a “wicked vamp” as the part had previously been played. She succeeds. As Mahmoud Baroudi, the evil Egyptian who fascinates the white woman. Conrad Veidt is a striking and sinister figure. No better choice <‘an be imagined for this difficult role. Then we have that great actor Sir Cedric Ilardwicke as Dr. Isaacson, the medical man who saves the life of bis friend, Nigel Armine, a part finely portrayed by John Stuart.

FIRE BRIGADE BALL. Indications are that the annual ball of the Greymouth Fire Brigade, to be held in Schaef’s Hall to-night, will be one of the social events of the year. The committee report having sold a urge number of tickets, which is very pleasing to the brigade. The music has been entrusted to the Gaiety Orchestra, which is a good guarantee of first class music. Old time and mod ern programme has been selected, while prizes will be awarded for the winner of the Lucky One Step and the spotlight dances. Fireman F. McEnnney, G. Batty and C. Heaphy will be in charge of the floor. The supper arrangements will be in the capable hands of Mrs. T. Mclntosh.
