TIPSY ELECTOR VOTES TWICE. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.j (Received August 12, 10.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. John Joseph Connelly, aged 49. the former Mayor of the suburb of Waterloo. and a leading figure in lotal political affairs, was convicted at the quarter sessions to-day on a charge of dual voting at the Waterloo municipa elections last December. He was bound over to be of good behaviour for twelve months, and was directed to refrain from entering a hotel bar during that period. Connelly’s defence was that he had been drinking on election day. and he had no knowledge of having voted twice. FEDERAL PARLIAMENT TO MEET. SYDNEY, August 12. After consulting his colleagues, Mr Lyons stated that the Federal Parliament will meet on September 24. BID FOR MORE U.S.A. TRADE. (Received August 12. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. Th© Sydney “Sun” says: Mr Lyons will propose to the Cabinet that Australia shall make direct representations to the United States for a reduction of its tariff barriers against Australian products. Mr Lyons said this afternoon that there is at- the moment a particularly friendly attitude towards Australia in the United States.
