WARDEN’S COURT
BARKY TOWN MINING KIGHTS. Proceedings were resumed on Saturday at the Warden’s Court before Mr. H. Morgan, S.M., in the hearing of applications for mining privileges over an area at Barrytown, which were objected to. The applications were:— James Leonard Bourke, John William Bourke, and Clarence Bourke, special alluvial claim, 26 acres, 1 rood 37 perches, Block 9, Waiwhero S.D., 21 years.—Objection by Daniel Dennehy. Janies Leonard Bourke, John William Bourke, and Clarence Bourke, water-race, 30 chains, Block 9, Waiwhero S.D., 5 heads, 21 years.—Objection by Golden Sands, Ltd. Daniel Dennehy, ordinary prospecting license, 26 acres 2 roods 30 perches, Block 9, Waiwhero S.D.—Objection by James Leonard Bourke, John William Bourke and Clarence Bourke, Mr. F. W. Kitchingham represented Bourke Bros. Mr. T. F, Brosnan appeared for Dennehy and Golden Sands, Ltd. George Ernest Poole, mining engineer, stated that he had had experience of mining by gravel pumps in Australia and Malaya. lie expressed the opinion that .ground of the type of that held by the Bourkes could be worked satisfactorily by a gravel pump, as proposed, and he gave details of the method. From his previous experience iu the Barrytown locality, witness was convinced that the whole of the 26 acres held by the Eourkes were gold-bearing, and worth Avorking. After mining, the ground couid be restored to good grazing condition.
Sinclair Trotter, engineer, Grey Power Board, stated that the Board had decided over a year ago, to extend its transmission line to the Barrytown district, and the work was to be put in hand within a week or so.
lie gave informal ion regarding mining pumps and engines. Robert Simpson, gold miner, stated that he and his mate bought a gravel pump, and worked on the Nine-Mile Beach, until a few weeks ago, when they shifted it to a point 10 or 15 chains from Bourke’s property. The pump Avas driven by a benzine engine, but the engine was under-powered and breakdowns made it expensive to run. The gravel pumj> gave every satisfaction. The ground they were working was Averse for a gravel pump than Bourke’s properly should be, because there were more stones in it.
This concluded the evidence, and the Warden again adjourned the proceedings, until to-morrow, when legal argument will be heard.
