(Our Own BEE.FTON, August 10. Mrs Milling, a sister of Mr A. J. Chattie, has arrived from Australia, to see her brother, who is recovering from a serious operation in Reef ton Hospital. Mr Ohabtle ha s so far recovered that he was able to lemve the Institution a day or two ago. Among those who left for Christchurch yesterday were Miss M. C. Wilson and Mr T. C. Irvingj, who have horses engaged at 'the Grand National meeting. Messrs C. and J. Barnett received the sjad news of the sudden death of their mother, Mrs Ellen Barnett, who expired suddenly at her residence, Waimea Street, Nelson. The deceased, who ;was 71 years old, leaves three sons, Ce-cil and Jack (Reefton), and Roy (Napier), and a daughter, who resides here. One son was killed in the Great War. The death took place at Rocklands of Miss Walkey, a well-known and respected resident. She was a daughter of the late Captain and Mrs W. Walker, of Nelson, and was 73 yelars of age. Mrs W. C. Mirfin, Ikamatua, is a sister. A successful fancy dress ball was held on Friday evening in 'the Catholic Assembly Hall. The following were the prize winners: Junior —Best dressed —girl, M. Reefton Advancement Assn, at a meeting received advice that only necessary repairs were being made toi the courthouse, and that Inangahua 1 bridge handrails were to be painted, also posts and struts. The Main Highways Board’ advised that if •would hr nleased to permit any societies to undertake voluntarily the beautification of main highways. It wlas, however, necessary to ensure the planting of trees did not encroach on the traffic, or interfere with visibility. The matter is being referred to the board’s representative at Greymouth. The Pub’ic Works Department advised that the beard was unable to assist finlaneially in the beautification proposed for the Buller road. Mr Dick referred to the cleaning of the side of the Buller road near Hhe railway station.
