MR. FORBES AT SYDNEY Many Entertainments (Aua. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) SYDNEY, August 9. , Mr G. W. Forbes stated that he understood it was likely an Imperial Conference to Dominion representatives would be invited, would be held in London in 1937, bu~. no date at present was suggested. There would also be further discussions next year with the British Government regarding meat. Air and Airs Forbes were guests or Premier Stevens and State Ministers at a private luncheon and 'they will be guests at a luncheon of the Millions Club, and later will bp given a reception by the Kia Ora New Zealand Club, and will attend a dinner arranged in their honour bv the Commonwealth Government. They are sailing on Monday for New Zealand by the AVanganella. The Maori footballers and ’the New Zealand women hockey players, to night, attended a farewell dance in their honour given by the Kai Ora New Zealand Club at the Pickwick Book Club, Sydney. They were received by Air W. Freeman President and Airs Stanley Hemp ton, organising see (■Received August 9 at- 11.15 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 9. ’ Air. G. W. Forbes had a strenuous round of entertainment to-day, but at only one gathering in his honour was ihe called on to deliver anything like a serious speech. Addressing the Millions Club at a luncheon, he said he had observed some criticism regarding the outcome of the recent conference of Cabinet Ministers in the Old Country. He regarded it as inevitable that he would meet with criticism when he returned to New Zealand, but he was quite prepared to take what was coming to him (Laughter). He was equally confident that the greater the knowledge which Afinisters. had obtained. first hand, of other countries and of world problems, the better would it he for those charged with the responsibility of government and for the countries they represented.

Air Forbes went on to refer the meat discussions. He said that while the British Afinisters were in duty bound to protect the interests of their own producers, they nevertheless were very fair and reasonable and always were mindful of the interests of the Dominion producers. Britain had treaties to observe, and, therefore, was not able to do what she would like to do while those treaties existed, but when the treaties expired, more satisfactory arrangements with the Dominions would be likely to ensue. He regarded the future most hopefully, but much depended on the prosperity of the Old Country. Mr. Forbes related his impressions of the King’s jubilee celebrations, which, besides being a memoriable scene, revealed a profound loyalty and belief in the influence of the British Empire, and affordel a striking contrast to confused conditions in other distracted countries. Mr. Forbes and his wife were the guests of the Commonwealth Government at a private dinner at the Hotel Australia to-night. Federal Afinisters and their wives were present. Later Afr. in their honour at the Carlton Hotel, and Afrs. Forbes attended a reception arranged by the New Zealand AVomen’s Association, the president of which is Mrs. J. AV. Prentice.
