ROSS DEEP LEVELS
PROSPECTING SCHEME. Whilst in Wellington last month Mr. John Murdoch, of Ross, went into the question of the prospecting of the Ross deep levels, down to 500 feet, or rock bottom, with the officers of the Unemployment Board. He interviewed the Deputy Chairman of the Board (Mr. W. Bromley) who took him to the Under-Secretary of Mines. Mr. Tindill, Dr. Henderson, Government Geologist, also being present. Subsequently, Mr. Bromley put the following proposition to Mr. Murdoch: If the leaseholders on the Ross flat are prepared to amalgamate their propositions, the Unemployment Board are prepared to scud down a boring plant, capable of boring to a depth of 500 feet. In the event of the results of the boring not being satisfactory, the properties will be handed back to the leaseholders without any cost to them. In the event of the boring proposition being successful, a proportion of the costs will be allocated to each area, plus a percentage, which would work in the foliowing manner. Supposing that out of twelve propositions, ten w’erc successful, and two were not, a percentage of the failures would be loaded on to the ten successful propositions. This proposition, from Mr. Bromley, has been referred to some of the lessees already, and it has been favourably received. The success of the scheme would mean that quite a number of registered unemployed would be absorbed in working the deep levels at Ross, as well as being a boom to the whole West Coast.
