COAL TRADE
REQUEST TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Borough Council last evening received from Mr A. M. McLagan (Sec rotary of the United Mine Workers’ of New Zealand) a letter asking that the Domicil be represented un a deputation to the Government, regarding the placing of a duty on coal imported, and requesting that that no new coal mining leases b e issued during the present state of the industry. Council or J. B. Kent said it was a most important matter to the down, and the town should assist. He moved that all support possible be given, and that if necessary a delegate be sent in October, Councillor Neville .seconded the motion. Councillor A. H. Paterson said that the whole trouble with the world today was the high tariffs, and such action as proposed was perpetuating these evils. It was a very big question and if the Government' made such restrictions, it was going to increase the tariff barriers. Councillor F. F. Boustndge said he was looking more at the latter pant of the request. They should assist in holding in abeyance coal leases, due to the slack time being worked by men “employed in the coal industry The motion was carried without dissent.
Councilor McGinley moved that in the event of a representative being sent, the Mayor be appointed. The Mayor said that there would be two more meetings of the Council, and th,, matter could be held over meanlime.
