FARMERS’ RENTS UNPAID. (Per Press Association). CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. Heavy arrears# of rent', owing by tenants of Canterbury Coleg e endowments, were referred to by the Chairman of the College Council. Mr C. T. Asch man, at a meeting to-day. The low prices for dairy produce and a very dry season had made things difficu t for all farmers. The CounqF.l had made reductions in rent, payment's due had been held over and relief granted in other ways. In 1928 unpaid rentals for all endowments amounted to £2460, whereas at the end of 1933, the amount estimated was £20,227. This year the arrears had been reduced £l6 580, a decrease partly by remisr sions and partly by payments of rents outstanding. The amount outstanding would be further reduced, but' only undue optimism could hope that the whole would be eventua'ly recovered.

GRAND JURIES. CHRISTCHURCH. July 30. The recent controversy °u merits and demerits of the grand jury system were the subject of reference by Mr Justice Northcroft, in his charge to the Grand Jury at’ the criminal session to-day. “I am not going to sav any thing controversial j.bout the subject but whatever pise is said about it,” hn said, “ it must' be helpful, that you ;:s representing a responsible section of the community should take part in l he administration of justice. The ad» ministration of justice, particularly on the criminal side, could net he satisfactorily accomplished without the community being completely 1 in apn oval of what was done. That grand jurors should see the type of cases brought forward and note from them fhp tendencies in the community, should react favourably, and if so the community should benefit enormously. **
