H»c- Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, July 30. A peculiar incident was observed in the Inangahua River this morning between Reefton and Black’s Point. A • asser-by noticed a black patch in the water some yards in extent and on mak•ng a closer inspection, found it to be a shoal of young salmon trout, containing myriads of fish, all about '•jk inches long. The peculiar W as hat they were alldownstream, as though tht-ywere’being chased. Just then some ten shags flew overhead upstream and it is thought that these j were the disturbing element. These birds have a resort some distance up ’ the river, but so far the head-hunters have not been able to bag them. The death occurred at Reefton Hospital at 10.30 last evening of Mr.

George Wells, one of the oldest residents of Reefton. He had not been enjoying the best of health for some months past, and last week entered the hospital. His sudden passing "ast evening was quite unexpected. The late Mr. Wells was a native of South Australia and was 73 years of age. He arrived at Invercargill with his parents when only two years of age, and came to the Coast when still a youth. After some time spent in South Westland at Bruce Bay, Okarito and elsewhere. he came to Reefton, and had since resided here for the long period nf 55 years. For a long time, in conjunction with the late Mr. J. Turner, hr was a timber contractor for the Globe Mine. Since then he had been timber man for various mines, being regarded as one of the best men at this particular branch of mining requirements. Mr. Weds was a keen tar-in-j man and one of the oldest members of" the Reef ton Jockey Chib, he having been one of the three life members of the Chib. He is survived by a widow and two sons. Alan (Reefton) and \rthur (Postmaster at Murchison), ano one daughter (Mrs. McDonald, Blenheim). who will have the sincere svmnathv of a wide circle of friends. The interment will take place on T hu The remains of the late Mr. were brought to Reefton by the train from Christchurch. arriving this morning. The interment wi-1 nlace to-morrow.
