ORCHESTRAL CONCERT

GEEY SOCIETY’S FINE EFFORT. The first concert of the 1935 season, of the Greymouth Orchestral Society, was presented in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, and further enhanced the reputation that the Society has earned for providing musical enteritaiument of the highest standard. Under the baton of Mr \V. 11. Coltman, the Orchestra has made undoubted progress,, and its latest performance was probably the most finished efforts since the inception of the new Society All of the numbers were tastefully rendered, with a nice balance and control. The most satisfying orchestral number was the “Chu Chin Chow” selection (Nor ton)(. the music of this well-known opera being given an interpretation that won instant favour with the audience. The assistance rendered to the Society by Miss Mary Martin (violinist) an Associate of the Royal College of Music, London. and Miss Nita Hopkins, was invaluable, the high standard of the performance of these artists being in keeping with the general excellence of the programme. Each of Miss Martin’s selections were chosen and played with infinite care, displaying .her talent, to the fullest advantage. She was sympathetically accompanied by Miss Moira McSherry. Miss Hopkins won instant approval in her vocal numbers, each of which were beautifully rendered, “Dawning” being perhaps the gem of her bracket. She was accompanied by Mrs, A. Gibson Foster. The programme was as follows. —Orchestral numbers: Overture, “Light Cavalry” (Suppe); Intermezzo. “Bells Across the Meadow” (Ketelby); Selection “Chu Chin Chow” (Norton); Song Transposition, “The Enl King” (Liszt); Highland Lament “Coronach’-' (Barratt); Novelty, “The Clock is Playing” (Bleouw); March, “Pole to Pole.” Violin Solo/ Miss Mary Martin.
