BOROUGH WORKS
INSPECTION BY COUNCIL. The of tihe newly-elected Borough Council yesterday made their first inspection of works proposed and in progress in the borough. There were present, the Mayor (Mr W. Meldrum), Councillors A. H. McKane, F. F. Boustridge, G. R. Harker. C. Neville, A. 11. Paterson, R. J. Williams, J. McGinley and the Borough ’Engineer (Mr A. J. Fairmaid).
A visit was first made to Cobden, the unformed portion of Clifford Street being the first point, of call. It wa s decided to repair the footbridge, and also 1o clean out the creek where it crosses the street and at the outlet. The Engineer drew the attention of the Councillors to the fact that the creek was unnamed, and it was decided to call it Range Creek, as it runs through the Cobden rifle range, and had been knoyvn. as the rifle range creek.
Cr. Williams drew the attention of the. Councillors to the dangerous nature of the intersection of Richmond and loyver Bright Streets, and it yvas left to the Engineer to yviden Bright Street at that point, and also to yviden the bridge on Bright Street, between Blackett and Richmond Streets.
An inspection yvas then made of the site of the proposed bridge in FoxStreet. The Engineer said that he had prepared three, estimates for the work of constructing the bridge and approaches, with a. footpath .and concrete kerbing and channelling. With a twelve feet culvert it yvould cost £775, a hardwood bridge £1125 and a concrete bridge £l2OO. Tt was decided to discuss the matter at the next meeting of the Council. Tt wa.s decided to fill a dangerous hole in Sturge Street, opposite the school, and to pipe the drainage water ayvav.
Following an inspection of Bright Street, the Engineer yvas instructed to bring down :t report as to yvhat he intends to do in regard to it, and an estimate of the cost, including tarsealing. Leaving Cobden, the Councillors inspected' Omoto Road, as far as the borough boundary, and discussed pro posed improvements from Coe’s corner to the boundary. A visit was paid to the pumping station, where the gas engines, now kept as a standby, were running. Tn Greymouth, the folloyvuig proposed works were inspected and discussed: The re-laying of Tainui Street between Murray and Thompson Streets; the re-laying of High Street, and the provision of concrete channel ling: the re-laying of the footpath in Buccleugh Street, Byron Street and Marlborough Street. An inspection yvas also made of the kerbing work' being carried out in Shakespeare Street, between FranlJyn and Rueel eugh Streets, and the roading yvork being done privately in the Kilgour sub-division in Marsden Road. Tn Blaketown, the following pro posed works wore inspected and discussed: Formation of the south end of Blake Street, and also Reid Strep' : the laying of a footpath on the west orn side of Dovle S'root, between Rigg and Collins Streets; and the till inf of the frog pond. The tour ended with the inspect ‘mi of Arney' Street where one of the proposed works is the of the footpath’ on the western side, land Richmond Quay.
