DENNISTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Industrial: The mines of Denniston worked full time last week and again this week. This is the first occasion for years they have got in a 10-shift pay. Many express the wish that a Japanese squadron would visit New Zealand more often. Why not wish that there were more coal burners on the New Zealand coast and that the majority of town dwellers were in regular work, when they would be able to buy more coal, which they are in need of? The intensely cold weather recently will increase the demand for coal. Personal: Airs Kiley and child, of Wellington, who had been visiting friends here, have returned home. Airs AL Clark is on a visit to Reef ton. Air O’Duffy has been discharged from the local hospital, where he had been 'since receiving injuries in the employ of the AV.C. Coy. Air J. Parker has returned home from hospital. It will be remembered that he met with an injury at a chopping contest. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. Mr R. The Committee will welcome all suggestions, especially as to titles of new books. Rugby:

The ground was anything but ideal lor fast football, though a very interesting game was witnessed by the enthusiasts who braved the elements to see Stockton juniors beat Pirates by 3 to nil. Afr R. Webster ably controlled the game. Jimmy Doyle, a Pirate player received injuries, that necessitated a visit to Westport Hospital for; an X-ray examination, which showed a fractured forearm. Pirate thirds won by a narrow margin against Ngakawau in a good game. The boys from the flat know how to throw the ball about, the passing game of their backs showing they are being well coached. The Club held their annual social in the Orange Hall but boisterous weather was against the expected attendance. Air Jas. Bronwlie, the President, welcomed all present, and expressed a hope that more residents would join the Club. The greens had improved and with a good pavilion many an enjoyable hour could be spent’ in ideal company and surroundings. Messrs Aleek and Chapman supplied the musicand Afessrs Allan and Kerr proved efficient Al’s.C. for the dancing, which was thoroughly enjoyed. An excellent supper was served by the ladies’ committee.
