SOCCER NOTES

(By 11 Tattler.-’) Last week-end proved anything but pleasant for tho fifth series of games for the Westland Cup. Dobson Prove too Good for Runanga: Dobson are now finding their feet, and were too many for Runanga. whose two backs -were a great deal at fault. Bobby Airns in goal played a good game, and no blame could be attached tn him for his t'eam’i’ heavy dof«iit. Cameron and Crown worked like Trojans. Dobson were somewhat lucl\v to be presented with so many easy chances. Groymouth Default; Tt was unfortunate that Groymouth should default to Wniu’in after Waiuta travelling to Greymoiitti. Grey mouth’s Seeretnrv did not see fit to play nt Groymouth on Sunday against Waiuta. but. tho weather mav have been bother at Blackball that day. However, it is to be hoped that Greyniouth show more consideration to a visiting team in future Junior’ It is unfortunate that Cobden have withdrawn from tho junior eompeti‘Hnn. ns it leaves only three teams in this grade. T.et Mac wake up! Fourth Grade:

This section is going ahead by leaps and bounds. Seven teams comprise this competition, 'with two now additions. namely. Runanga and Marist. Mr W. RafTorfv h:i< succeeded in gott:ng a team together wheie others have failed. Runanga have the nucleus of a good side, and if tlrnv keep togothoT will prove a tough proposition for any team. Cobden have a c olid team, and it is difficult to pick the chib’ that will give 4 hom thoir first defeat. Tn Mount ford Balderstone, Roberts. McLean, and R Groufsky. they have a formidable five who would do well in junior grade Chatham Cup:

T hear that tho W.F.A. have decided ’that all Chatham Cu.n ties will be phiyed on neutral ground. To my wav of thinking J 'his is the host course to *nke with these games. Th° Chatham Cup draw i« n s follows; Dnb«nu v. Runanga at Victoria Park; Marist v Waiuta at. Cobden. Thi s Week-end’s Gaines: Runanga travel to Waiuta on Sunday in quest of league points, and n real ding dong game is to be expected Waiuta are pager Ijo avenge their two to one defeat at. the hands of Runanga a. few weeks ago. A draw Irok* iikely here. Mun st engage Groymouth at VieVark on Saturday, with the odds slivtitlv on ‘Marist. Greyrmuth, however arp now playing better, and a •rrea'l game should eventuate. A Point or Two: These few hints should ]trove fruitful to spectators, linesmen and referees; A referee has no right to restrict the duties of a linesman merely to signal when the ball is out of play, and indicating the directiion of a throw-in or whether, the correct decision is a goal-kick or a corner. Tho speed of the play will often leave the referee in no position from which to judge offside. Offences will occur when he is unsighted, or so far anvay that to give a decision ho would be in doubt. Here a linesman in a better position than the referee should give the decision, and it should bo accepted. . Marist seniors v. Greynion'li at Victoria Park. 2.45 p.m to-morrow.—AV. Timlin Grogan McLean, Henderson. Wood O’Connell, Alai tin. Pavlov. Pollock. J. Timlin. Marist juniors v. GreymoiHh at Victoria Park 1.30 p.m. to-mewrow.--For-sythe, Have, Kerr. Anderson.
