(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, May 14. The Hospital Board is seeking approval of the Health Department for the appointment of Dr. K. R. Brokenslure as Medical Officer for South West land. A Public Works Department threesea'!er motor ami a lorry belonging to Dee’s collided on the Humuhiev’s road last night. The grocery vehicle was much damaged in front, both iu the framework and. wheels, am! the other machine was also l con siderably damaged. The Gael left Wellington for Grey mouth and Hokitika this, evening at 5.25 o'clock. The Hospital Board at a special meeting last evening, considered the estimates, in which there is provision to spend £lO,OOO on a new ward, operating ilheat re and nurses’ home. When the estimates are returned from the Health Department, they will be referred to the local bodies concerned, when their ratting contributions will be assessed. The chairman welcomed Messrs N. 11. Brown and J. A. Murdoch, new County representatives. Ar apologv for absence was received from Mr H. T. a new Borough re presentative.
The Matron of Westland Hospital, Miss M. E. Anderson, who is leaving at .the end of the week for Wellington, on seven months’ leave of absence, to complete her training, was given a send-off latet evening at a social evening by the Hospital nursing staff cards and dancing being the programme.
At a meeting of the Westland Racing Club Committee, the treasurer submitted a statement of receipts and expenses in connection with the May meeting. Allowing for estimates to be reached the meeting disclosed a profit of about £2OO. The result was received with satisfaction, and votes of Thanks were accorded all who assisted. It was decided to have the race track given further attention with fertiliser and lime, Mr Mclntosh promising three tons of lime. A letter was received from Mr T. E. Coates> Greymouth, congratulating the Club on its late meeting. Messrs F. McCabe, M. Cameron and G. S. Walton were elected members of the Club. The Racing Conference notified the intention of: enforcing steeplechase event's between May and August in future. Regarding racing dates, the Secretary was requested to go into the matter and make the necessary application in due course. The work of the secretary was referred to in praiseworthy terms, also Hie help given by Mr Jeffries in assisting to advance the interests of the race meeting with outside crowds. The Hokitika hockey team to play at Greymouth to-morrow are: Cooper, R. Spence, Greenfell, Pai khill,Roberts, Collett-. Stapleton, Fleming, Dwan, Morgan and Iliirren. The following will play at Cass Square: Chisholm, Smith, Hurren, Hughes, Pierson, Spence, Monk, Stapleton, Truman, Hunter and Bell.
The Rugby Sub-Union last evening fixed the following matches for Saturday; Greymoutih. v. Westland,. Cass Sepia re, at 3 pan. (Mr J. McCleary). Junior fixtures: Excelsior v. Arahura, Ca.*>*s Square, No. I ground, at 1.30 p.m. (Mr R. Collett); Kok at ahi v. Kiwi, at Cass Square. No. 2 ground, at 1.3'0 p.m. (Mr Rutland). Applications for footballs from the Ross and Mananui schools were deferred for favourable consideration until the football grant came to hand. Mr Steel donated a cup for the June seven-a-«ide tourney. It was decided to hold a dance on Saturday evening to augment a fund for injured players*. Mr Lawn said 'the secretary of the Rover Club had advised him that their junior team would be unable to field a side for its future engagements. D. Cagnev’s application for reclassification was approved. J. A. Martini’s application for admission to ’the code was l f<owarded on to the West Coast Union e. .t h a recommendation for approval. Ih». names of three referees were sub- , ra.tted for the Grey-Hokitika match on Saturday, Messrs McCleary. Breeze and Rutland. The names wore drawn Mr McCleary was appointed. The Rover Club were asked to provide a gatekeeper. Mr Stafford wan appointed manager of the Westland 'team, Mr J. Devaney coach. Mr Cutbush baggage man, Mr I). Heenan toueh-linc judge, and W. McMuJlan and J. Breeze ball boys. It was decided that the representative team meet for practice on Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30 p.m. an J assmnole on Saturday at the pavilion ; t 2.30 p.m.
