GOLD MINING

NEW RIVER DREDGE. Air P. F. Thorpy, Director of the New River Dredging Coy., advises that the tender of Anderson’s, Ltd., of Christchurch, was yesterday accepted for the construction of the dredge, on which work is to be immediately commenced. BLACKWATER SLUICING CO. The Blackwater Creek Sluicing Coy. secured a return of 25ozs for 22 •shifts. PAPAROA PROSPECTING. (From a Correspondent.) Operations which have been in progress since last November, on the high country of the Paparoa Ranges, by a gang under the Unemployment Subsidy have been closed for the winter months. The country on the higher levels, namely the Alpine meadows, has been prospected from the headwaters of Deadman’s Creek in the North, right down to the Ten Mile in the South. Although some hundreds of reefs and leaders were examined, nothing of importance was found on the higher levels. The remarkable feature of this country is the number of big lodes which it carries, and the absence of even one gold bearing lode. At a lower level, ranging from 700 to 2000 feet above sea level, in the headwaters of Fagin Creek, a whole series of lodes, ranging from Ift to 10 feet diameter at the outcrop have been found. Four of these have proved to be carrying both gold and silver. The importance that attaches to this series is that the stone is totally different to any that is usually found on the Paparoas, being the opaque, smoky, blue stone, which usually carries gold, and is not oxidised like the white semivitreous stone peculiar to this country. Camps are being erected in Fagin Creek, and every one of these reefs will be driven on and prospected along the line of strike. Shoad stone, picked up in the bush, points to there be ing a few more yet undiscovered lodes of the same quality. The width of the whole series does not exceed half a mile. The accessibility to Barrytown and the steepness ot the country make this region one of the finest prospecting propositions yet discovered in Westland. Operations are under the direction of Air. S. W. S. Strong, Alining Engineer and his supervisor. Air. Simon Crase, while the active prospecting will be carried out by a gang of four experienced miners. Indications point to the possible opening of a new field within one hour’s walk of Barry town. THE CROESUS OPERATIONS. A trial survey of the Croesus mine was carried out last week, and it is very likely that operations will commence in the near future to try and locate the lode between No. 3 and 4 levels and from all appearances should be successful as a winze sunk from No. 3 proves the stone for a depth of at least seventy five feet below No. 3. THE TAFFY. The Taffy claim situated on the left bank of the Ten Mile Creek has been receiving attention from subsidised prospectors. An old stope has been opened, and it was found that a fairly rich leader still exists, and considering that the direction of the strike is away from the Ten Alile fault, and tne leader has properly defined walls. A tunnel driven to the left of the old workings to intersect this stone should, from all appearances, give the famous old Taffy a new lease of Hfe.
